OP, how come ghosts/gods/dragons don't talk to people as much now as they used to?

Homogenization. The popular variations of all these supernatural, fantastical or religious figures have been distilled to the most monetarily valuable stereotype. The mad god. The western style Dragon. The "Paranormal Activity" ghost.

It comes down to a lack of imagination as a writer rips off another.
