Oh look!
Another amazing offer to pay in advance for product that doesn't even exist yet! And it came out only a week after similar offer from Arena Net!

Looking at the popularity of these offers, I have only one conclusion:
The world is screwed!

Can we rename common sense to rare-as-ice-in-hell sense?
I think you are confused. This is not a Kickstarter article. The game is almost complete and it's a highly anticipated title. You can get your money back if want to, Steam is pretty good about that. With a Steam Pre-purchase, the company doesn't even get the money until the game is released.

The reason you have to worry about cheaters is because you're forced online. It is DRM.
I don't remember saying i was worried about cheaters, if you see the post it says "my drops". What i would ideally have is a system like Dugeon Defenders with one "official" bracket and one "moddable & offline" bracket. If i can't have both i go with the one with the official bracket because i know i will enjoy more getting good loot there; not that i am saying it's better.

I am also not sayint it ain't DRM, the way they plan to implement the always online stuff works as both DRM and anticheat, i am saying i am willing to have the DRM for the knowledge that every drop anyone got from the game it was obtained the hard way.

Lastly and my biggest reason, having played a lot of Diablo clones i know basically what to expect of Tourchlight II (Tourchlight I was better than Diablo II if you don't take into account the release years btw), but i am curious what will happen if you do a hybrid of Diablo and a MMO.

TL;DR - Torchlinght II seems good but all too familiar. I want to see what happens when Diablo marries WoW in therms of gameplay, community and content; and will put up with no mods and always online for that.

Even without a release date, Runic maintains that the game is just about finished. "We're pretty excited to see Torchlight 2 approaching completion, and can't wait to get it into players' hands to see what they think," said team lead (and company president) Travis Baldree, "It's been a long haul, and taken more time than we expected, but we hope you'll agree that the additional time has been worth it. Thanks for sticking with us!"
I watched a video preview of the game (at Pax, maybe?) just recently where they admitted they were worried that Diablo 3 would hurt their sales and intentionally put it off. They said they just decided to polish the hell out of it and release when the hype had died down a bit.

Ok well I hope you like Diablo III. I personally object to always online DRM for a single player game.

Hooray! if I need an Arpg, here's where I'm going.

while I must admit im getting sick of identifying items now, original torchlight wormed its way into my vocab thanks to that cat. so i get offline play, co-op, LAN play, AND a cat to vendor my loot for me while i teach the laws of physics to shaddap and sit down? wonderful!

Forever? Since when have people started forking out cash in advance with no chance of refund for product that doesn't even exist yet?
Aside from the nonsensical "no chance of refund" clause (though that happens too, it's called something else) pre-orders of non-existent product have been around since figuratively forever. E.g., it took forever for Duke Nuke 'Em Forever to come out after its initial pre-orders.

Torchlight 2, Diablo III, Path of Exile and Grim Dawn(hopefully).
I sense a wonderful future for Clickity ARPGs. I'm not very intrested in Torchlight, but I'll most probably pick it up if it gets good feedback. The demo for the first game didn't make me itching to buy it at all.

Saw it earlier on Steam today and was tempted, but I'll go with Diablo III. Why? Because of the always online, because I don't see it as DRM but as an anticheat system and i want my drops to mean something.

Just my opinion though.
Save for the Always-Online (of which I wholeheartedly disagree with you on, but that's beside the point), I'm almost tempted to agree with you on the drops. However, the way Blizzard has this whole thing set up, your drops really won't matter.

You see, because of the Auction House, Blizzard tracks the popularity and average sell price for any and all items, and gauging how much people want certain items. As such, if they so choose (as they've talked about in previous interviews), they reserve the right to "adjust" the natural drop rates of items in game.

What does this mean? It means that, should an item become very popular, Blizzard can and probably will decrease the drop rate of that item; making that item more rare thereby increasing demand and value.

So in a sense, your drops in Diablo 3 don't mean a damn thing in the end as Blizzard effectively has total control over what stuff you get and when/where you get it. Thus all but negating any randomness to their so called "random drops".

As for the anti-cheat aspect of the always on, you're right. It may keep some people from cheating. But, does it really matter? Diablo 3 isn't shipping with it's PvP mode. In fact, it won't be available for quite some time. Ergo, what's the point of having a robust anti-cheat feature if it doesn't really matter if someone's cheating?

Oh right...because if people were "cheating" to get items, and then sold them, Blizzard couldn't legally make money off of those transactions.

Yeah. I'm sorry. I'm an avid fan of the Diablo series, with 2 being one of my favorites among my favorite games "ever", but I really can't bring myself to give a damn about Diablo 3; or even Blizzard for that matter. I really do not like what they've become since merging with Activision. They're at a point now wherein they are not only telling us when we can play our games but HOW we're supposed to play them. That's just bullshit.

O.T.
Can't wait for Torchlight 2. Pre-order is already in place for a four-pack. Soon as it launches I'm having four friends drop by so we can LAN that thing. Should be an exquisite night of pizza, beer, and old-school ARPG adventure and loot.

(as a side note, anyone who's a fan of Diablo 2 should be more interested in Torchlight 2 because Runic, makers of Torchlight, were the original team that made Diablo 2 over at Blizzard. After waiting years for Blizzard to finally green-light Diablo 3, and after dealing with the BS Blizzard was becoming, they split from Blizzard to form Runic.)

Holy shit, I have been looking for a reason to buy Torchlight 1 for a while, and Torchlight 2 was a definite buy anyway, win win! All for £15!

My only concern is replay value.

Torchlight 1 was certainly worth $20.00 but didn't have anywhere near the replay value of Diablo 2 IMO. I fear the same will be true where comparing T2 to D3.

I plan on passing on Torchlight 2 in favor of Diablo 3. But I'm sure I'll buy T2 off a steam sale down the road for $5.00 or less.

All of which are also true about Grim Dawn (from the Titan Quest guys). You can get a copy of Torchlight 2 and Grim Dawn and still have spent $20 less than what Diablo 3 will cost, along with (in my opinion) being treated better as a customer. Right now is a good point in time to be into non-Blizzard ARPGs.

Edit: Oh, and they also both explicitly support mods, which not everyone cares about but is something that makes me happy.
Cheaper: Yes.

Better: Doubtful.

If the previous game is any indication Diablo 3 will be so much better than Torchlight its not even funny.
I played Torchlight 1, and the Diablo 3 beta weekend. Torchlight 2 MIGHT have been interesting if released before Diablo 3.

As it is I'll be to busy yelling FUCK YEAH FINALLY! to notice T2.

What is good about T2 compared to D3? The rune system of D3 is brilliant. The fact that most classes boast more or less infinite resources for endless action is fantastic. The extremely well thought out design of monsters, color use, effects etc is just...awesome. There is nothing from T2 I want. The functionality of the dog was pretty cool, but it really wouldnt fit the feel of a Diablo game anyway.

I was hesitantly excited about D3...but after trying it...oh man. It'll probably last as long as its predecessor.
