I'm playing the game right now and I must say that it's likely the best Diablo clone since Diablo 2. It's simply a fun, pleasant game with an extremely user-friendly mechanics. I'm not sure how else to put it, but if we say a game like Demon's Souls wants to kick you in the nuts and spit in your eye, the Torchlight thinks you're a great person and wants to take you out for drinks...
The graphics are pleasant, the controls are effortless, the mechanics make sense and are easy to understand, spells and skills are satisfying to use, items are plentiful and can be customized in various ways, etc.
To illustrate, I'll use your pet. You can pick a cat or a dog at the start of the game. This creature will follow you around and protect you. It also has an inventory of its own and can be ordered to return to the town and sell the stuff so you don't have to. It can also be taught two spells of your choice (which can be changed later), so you can have it tossing Fireballs and summoning Zombies or have it Heal you and cast Resistance spells. You can feed it fish to transform it into various other creatures with their own strenghts and weaknesses. And that's just your pet...
