I don't really care what game it is as long as CA learned from Empire and went back to doing whatever they were doing when they made Rome and Medieval II.

I'm just glad they're moving away from gunpowder again.

So excited to find out what it'll be!
Its got a bloody long way to go before they've got away from gunpoweder being dominat in western warfare, another 200ish years.
Just look at how much sand is still left in the hourglass. I'd say that at most, 1/5 has fallen through so far.
I wouldnt take that as an accurte guide meself. I'd personally like a new rome game but less rome focussed.

Based on how much sand there still is despite being almost 200 years on it's way I'd say something during the birth of civilizations, Egypt, Mesopotamia etc...

i think only a 20th of the sand has fallen. Doing the math, it ends up that it will be around 3500 years ago. 1500Bc

The element Mercury has been discovered in Egyptian tombs dating from this decade.
1506 BC ? Cecrops, legendary King of Athens, dies after a reign of 50 years. Having survived his own son, he is succeeded by Cranaus.
c. 1506 BC ? Thutmose I (Eighteenth dynasty of Egypt) starts to rule. Alternatively, a date of c. 1504 BC is a possibility.
Egypt conquers Nubia and the Levant (1504 BC?1492 BC).
Earliest remains of domesticated ferrets found[1].
Biblical Exodus, according to Simcha Jacobovici in the earliest suggestion of the documentary Exodus Decoded.
Polynesians settle in Fiji.
c. 1500 BC ? Mycenaean civilization starts in Ancient Greece.
c. 1500 BC - Formative/Preclassic period starts in Mesoamerica.
1500 BC?500 BC?Vedas are composed.

wikipedia'ed events.

Chinese astronomers make the earliest record of an appearance of a comet.
c. 1500 BC India [Hinduism] The Hindu Vedic hymns and religious rituals become established in India.
c. 1500 BC Europe [everyday life] The Urnfield cultures flourish in this and the following century in England (in Wessex), southern Germany, and Denmark. The Urnfield people are pastoral rather than agricultural, use bronze extensively, and are ruled by a warrior class of aristocracy. They cremate chiefs and their families and place the remains in urns which are then interred in cemeteries. The culture continues into the Iron Age (c. 700 BC).
c. 1500 BC Central America, North America, South America [everyday life] Neolithic skills similar to those in Europe ? weaving, basketmaking, pottery, the building of houses, and the formation of villages ? develop in the Americas, as well as a priest class. The use of iron, the wheel, the plough, and money will not develop until the coming of European colonialists.
c. 1500 BC Asia Minor [materials] The Hittites of Asia Minor are the first to discover how to obtain iron from iron ore. Although iron is the second most abundant metal in the Earth's crust, metallic iron is only known from the rare discovery of iron-rich meteorites.
c. 1500 BC China [transport] Wheeled vehicles appear in China.

Expect a bunch of bulllshit and extreme historical inaccuracies.

Hopefully it's still fun.

alternatively, it could be up to a 12th or so, which would land us smack dab back in the birth of Rome.

Why expect bullshit and historical inaccuracies? So far, I haven't seen many mistakes in the TWs except for starting positions, and that was for balancing.

i would like rome with new features but if not i would want world war 1-2 with proper trench warfare with artillary and supplies lines that would be important
There's a team making a WW1 mod for Napoleon Total War ( http://www.moddb.com/mods/ww1tw ) which seems to have trenches, tanks and artillery.

OT: I was hoping the next TW would be a revisiting of Shogun, but judging by the current speed of the timeline, I would guess that we're looking at something in the 1st millenium AD at the latest, probably earlier.

If their going backwards to a time before Empire and Nepoleon then I'd be very disapointed. The series is best when it continues forward.
and No! The series turned into a pile of skirmishing gun fights with no fun at all. It lost the magic that made the TW games what they were.

EDIT: 1824? Damn it.

I really hope this series finally comes to a close. I have played many and they are all so alike. In fact I have played nearly all of them. They just become so tedious.

It's not like you have to buy them. I personally am really looking forward to the next installment in the series and I'm sure that many other people are, too.

I think CA gets less and less accurate the further they go back in time. Screeching women? Wardogs? Warpigs? Gladiator units? Arcani? No. Not good. Unless you can prove that Empire is just as inaccurate in such blatant ways...

They actually did use pigs and dogs. Gladiators? Okay, I'll give you that one. About the others, I don't know. I do doubt that there were women screaming on the battlefield, however the women of the Germanic tribes fought with the dogs when their camps were attacked.

Ancient Egypt: Total War.

Do battle with bronze and stone. Yeah!

We have so many World War II games, but why no love for 3,000 B.C.E.?

As long as they abandon the crappy musket tactics in Napoleon, I'll be happy. I'll be more happy if it's Rome 2: Total War, since I still regularly play the first one. Hopefully the new version will be the same with fewer bugs.

I reckon Persia could be the main focus. Would be interesting, mixed with the Greeks at that time. Those two could always be the other way around. Alexander the Great could be in the mix. At this point, anything is possible.

One of the developers mentioned that:-
"The Creative Assembly will unveil the next title in its strategy series which ?eschews the gunpowder weaponry of recent Total War titles and gets back to basics".

Personally I'm still holding out for a Asian themed one, maybe incorporating China, Japan, Mongolia, India. Plenty of history and battles flowing around those areas, I guess they're just not as well know as European history.
Hm... I actually liked the gunpower era stuff. Hell, I hoped they'd go for more modern guns next. Oh well, we'll see what they do next.

I never played Napoleon(add-ons to TW games usually suck even though the games themselves are great), what crappy musket tactics are you talking about?

Aww I was hoping for a WW1 total war (guess we'll see that at some point though, they've hinted at it before), though I imagine whatever they go with will be brilliant as usual.

Napoleon is the latest in the series, not an addon. But basically, the addition of muskets means that there's effectively only one type of combat. It means that you lose height advantages, flanking is almost pointless, and you hardly have to try to match up units with enemies they'll be effective against because they are all the same.
