So while tying pointlessly to sleep I realised that with the obvious glaring exception of China, the creative assembly guys have now covered just about every major Empire and period since the Rise of the Roman Empire.

Given that they have now done most of the leg work in units and history so could this be a potential project for the CA guys?

More over. Would you play it?

I don't think it would work so well. For a start, the Total War games tend to span at least a few centuries. WW2, the longer of the two World Wars, only lasted 6 years.

TW games also tend to focus on empire-building. The only 3 nations actively empire-building during WW2 were the three that got thumped in the end.

Finally, the dynamic of the battles would change. Tanks, IFV's, aircraft, off-map artillery and automatic weapons completely changes the dynamic of a battle. The line-up-facing-each-other-and-charge approach doesn't work on a modern battlefield.

Look up and old game called Combat Mission. The first 3 titles in the series (Beyond Overlord, Barbarossa to Berlin, and Afrika Korps) are turn-based, but are still a very good indicator of just how different this would be.

Try Hearts of Iron, and play CM from time to time for the up close and nasty bits!
