I don't know, all of you have right, but it seems I didn't released how I get affected when he speak negative for specific things.

Sure, when he tell his opinion for a game or in some gaming news, I don't mind, I like the style he have, but now I don't know....

He did nothing wrong. There was nothing at Pax I wanted to see covered. It's Holidays, I was also with family.
That's it. I had a media overload and just zoned out from most events.

He took the risk of going to it and covering it, interest must just not have been as high as last time. And sadly... financially it probably hit him in the stomach.

Youtube also tends to dick around with their layouts constantly and it causes some people not to see some videos from channels they're subscribed to, this probably didn't help as I know there was a slight outbreak of this.
Also TB tends to be a tad too tempted to acknowledge his trolls and antagonists more often than the people who are supporting him. See twitter for more of that.

Other Youtubers just completely zone out their overtly negative (not constructive criticism, stuff like 'lol u din like mi fav game ur a fegget') responses and tend to create an image of a more stable and genial person. TB Is...not that guy. And that's what some of his fans like him for. Others...detest it.

I know his tag line is 'The Cynical Brit' but he's got to realize that people can only take so much of before they get annoyed and go off to look at cute cat videos and people with friendlier attitudes. I'm no peach myself, but...thankfully I don't have to make a living off my personality. I'd be broke and homeless.
That would be my two cents but...what do I know, even if I wrote it to them, I doubt anyone would care, or agree with any of it.

I used to watch him back when he was enthusiastically (and with seemingly a happier tone of voice?) covering the WoW: Catacylsm Beta. But a year after that I found I just wasn't enjoying him as a personality anymore and moved on.
Nothing against the guy, but if he wants my attentions back I'd like the person who sounds like he enjoys what he's doing.

But as it is, I'll listen to him shoutcasting Starcraft matches sometimes. And him + Jessie Cox is a far more welcome formula to my ears since Jessie tends to poke something terribly amusing out of him, but that's it. I don't watch him play games, interview or cover events or any of that anymore.

TB complains about his subscriber's over zealous fanboy-ism yet whines when his videos don't get enough views. I really cannot stand him anymore, I used to be a fan, I really did, until his crusade on FOV. I tried getting back into his videos with his The War Z video, but of course 5 minutes in he complains about the FOV. In all honesty, this is how he always acts.
he get money every time some one watches his videos, the only money he gets, this is his job, this is not about fanboys this is about he lively hood, if you suddenly began losing money on your job you by all right would be asking why, thats all TB is doing. as for the FOV thing, on larger moniter a small FOV can cause motion sickness, which for those who suffer it can be a big deal.

Hmmm..
There are two sides to this coin, first of all, it's the mans full time job. It's what he lives off of, and he just wants to know what to do next. He's asking what to do, to improve his product.
But the way he's going about it to his viewers isn't really helping. He's trying to make the viewer feel guilty for not watching everything he makes, even if you like it or not. That won't really help him, at all, probably do the opposite such as now.

I'm not really seeing the aggressiveness here, so I'm a bit confused. To me it just sounds like a guy asking for feedback on how to make the most out of his spending. If he's spent £10k on videos that no one is watching it's understandable to be concerned, especially if it's his living.
I know TB can be a prickly guy despite not really watching him, but this video isn't one of them. Even if he had been it would be somewhat understandable considering the position he's in.

Indeed, that why I said I acknowledge his problem he have for the future. I understand that he needed a lot of money to go to PAx and much more if he want to go to E3 this year and he must make sure if he have views from his effort.

However the way he ask for help is for me....obscure. The way he said that we are just watching his videos so he can make more money, seems strange. And I know he need us to be more succesful and still have this job he doing, but did you ever see other reviewer like him to say that?

Of course maybe I overeacting about this whole thing [and yes, I believe I do], but this Vlog leave me a bad taste...
He's being honest about it. The reason you don't see other producers and reviewers talking like that is they know it will put fans off. But thats definitely the way they think. I bet if a reviewer on the Escapist started only doing indie games no-one has heard of or cared about and views started dropping off, the Escapist would probably stop paying them very much.

But for everyone (maybe not the Jimquisition because Jim has a different job that probably pays enough that those videos can be a fun side project), they probably do think the way TB thinks. TB has family and if people don't watch his videos his family makes less money. It probably would have been better for him to disguise it and dress it up a bit. His choice of video title was bad, but you can guarantee every professional reviewers watches their view counts like a hawk

How long have you been watching TB for? This is his personality. He's a prickly guy. He takes criticism...or perceived criticism...to heart, and tends to lash out in response.
And he's prone to delete comments that disagree with him.

Just as a thought experiment, I'm going to take the top comments from two Retsupurae videos, two Game Grumps videos, two of Chip & Ironicus' Let's Plays, and two of Yahtzee's Let's Plays.

I don't find Youtube to really be the place I want to look for scintillating discussion.

OT: OP, TotalBiscuit is always like that. He's a very abrasive person, and he takes personal offense to a lot of the trollish things people do on Youtube -- Hence the blocking of comment voting, since his viewers regularly mark his own comments as Spam. I'll admit I probably don't have as much exposure to him as some other people, since I only regularly follow "WTF Is...", but he comes across as very prideful of his work, and this is his work.

What is the problem?

He's simply asking for viewer feedback. Aside from outlining his position, it's nothing more than that.

I knew that was going to come back at me
I didn't say the youtube comments are of high quality or useful (okay maybe I did imply - but my argument is not limited to that).

It's just that youtube has many channels competing for views, you need any edge you can get. And if you remove comments, or likes/dislikes, or voting on comments then it's not going to help your chances. it may not factor into your viewing habits but I guarantee you its a factor for a significant proportion of potential viewers.

What do I think?

Never seen one of this guy's videos before. Just got done watching the video you posted. Not going to start watching this guy any time soon.
This is why I hate it when people like OP intentionally miss the point of his video in order to spread hate and misinformation to gullible people such as yourself who base an entire person's worth off one little thing.
Much like TB did with his little Defiance video?

That is, complaining like fuck about AI whilst in the tutorial, giving his viewers a false sense of the quality of the game because the devs intentionally made the enemies in that area braindead because they're hoping to entice the viewers of the TV series who may not be big time gamers to play and want to ease them into the game gently.

The game actually gets a lot tougher and the AI a lot better later on, the only valid complain in that whole video was that the options menu could be better for PC.

OT: Way back when I watched all of his videos and then he went into it full time and I was OK with that, and then he threw his first tantrum and I was a bit put off but recovered and then he started getting very elitist and threw more tantrums and I was put off and my interest in his videos dwindled rather sharply from there to the point that I'd only watch his videos if the game was one I wasn't totally sold on but liked the look of.

I won't deny it, his WTF videos are helpful but his personality is very grating to me.
Did you miss the parts where he mentioned that this is still the tutorial and not to take it as an overall representation of the quality of the whole game? He said it several times, and said that since this isn't his overall WTF is... for the game that it should be taken with a massive grain of salt. He posted it as an early concern, because the AI was HORRIBLE for the tutorial. It wasn't even like they were slightly stupider, it was like they were blind, deaf and retarded...

His vlog video actually showed background footage of Defiance outside of the tutorial and offered some more insight into it, and he will do a proper WTF is... once he gets a better idea of what the game is and where it shines and falters.

OT: Nothing was wrong with that vlog, just a guy who gets paid based on view count wondering if he fucked up something or id his viewers dont want convention footage.

Exactly, he said the AI might get better later on so he should have realized how unfair it was to post a video on his relatively popular channel slamming the game for it's tutorial AI.

I saw MANY comments of people saying the video convinced them not to buy the game and he knew full well that his video would have that effect, I find that rather annoying.

I had actually watched the full 20 or so minutes before this thread came up (I am subbed after all). Frankly I didn't hear anything shocking (though maybe I'm just a fanboy). He didn't tell people that they should be watching his videos anyway, he just asked what made his PAX videos less appealing and if it was worth doing.

In fact, I'm kind of always confused why people think he comes off as too arrogant or mean, although maybe I share too many of his sentiments.
