Soon, soon we will have holodecks and probably interactive porn

I have watched the video through and it looks pretty cool, but there, to my knowledge is no idea about when this technology will be widely available. Which is a shame, because I really want to play Dynasty Warriors in a holodeck before I die.

EDIT: If this has been posted before I appologise, but there isn't anything I can really do now.

Holy cow, I was right, in a very short time they could do a faithful remake of Wizard of Oz, and when she ends up in.. what the name of the place.. oh well, you know what I'm talking about. Everything turns holographic without using glasses. I fucking called it.

So we could finally punch people through the internet soon? This feature is long overdue.

The biggest problem with this implementation would be scaling it to be large enough to be useful, I would think. Sure, it works relatively well for raindrops falling on a guy's hand (not perfectly, as they often fall through his fingers and near his wrist), if you wanted to make it bigger, even just desk-sized, you would need way more sensors, or to position them further away so that they could "see" more area. You'd need more of the ultrasound generators, too, so that force could be applied throughout. (As an aside, why are they using ultrasound instead of just puffing air? Is it the same thing, only with a fancier name?) Also, if you wanted something more 3D in reactions, you'd need the generators to completely surround you, meaning that nothing could get in between you and the output.

Not saying these things are insurmountable (indeed, I bet it won't take that much time for people to think of good enough, then great, solutions), but they're just more things that need to be done before this has any real value outside of "Hey, look at this thing!" in my mind.

In order to avoid puffing air. By using their ultrasound rig they're able to impose a force at a certain point in 3D space, rather than a turbulent jet of air which is massively inefficient and would create too much of a spread over any sort of distance.

If you watch the video again; they very specifically demonstrate full control of the force application (rippling the paper back and forth) and then show that by putting the paper down at the level of the generator they don't get much disruption. It's not perfect, but it's better than nothing (and better than airjets).

That was my first thought too
"Touchable holograms? Rich man's porn"

Probably going to empty your savings account though.

If you wanna hit this thing, it's gonna be tough. There's an outer ring here, and an inner ring; like a spiral. They use this to get up and down the tree.

Avatar. Cookie please; I prefer chocolate chip.

More on-topic, this is pretty impressive. Remember that one of the hardest things in practical science today is to provide a working prototype. Once you get that out of the way, making the item smaller, more efficient and more afforable is all a matter of time and research.

So are you saying I will be able to take phone calls from my dad much in the same way Darth Vader took phone calls from the Emperor? I suppose next you'll say I can reenact the scene from Lost in Space when that dorky kid had the holographic robot thing.
