Basically, I heard about Touhou, but I honestly have no idea how the hell to actually get the game, how to run it, where to get it... Trying to find anything helpful just left me confused...

If there are any fans of the games, I don't suppose you'd be willing tell me?

Touhou! Well, search around on Ebay. I got mine off of a friend who also happened to like the games as well. You just run it like a normal program, but make sure to patch it in English as well. You could also find download sites, but just be sure that they're safe.

That's all the advice I can give. If you'd like, I'll find a site for you from where you can download it. I'll come back after I've found it. =)

Edit- Here's a good site for anyone else interested.

As for which games to start off with, I recommend Touhou 8 or 13, as they're easy compared to the other games. I personally recommend Touhou 6, but it's more of personal opinion at this point.

Torrent. Don't ban me mods! Since its kind of hard to get the games, most people just download it and I've heard the one and only dev, ZUN, apparently doesn't care too much about the piracy of his games. Also, the first 5 have to be run on an emulator of the NEC PC-9801. Its was popular Japanese pc so if you have to change the settings, they're in Japanese. Its not too hard to figure out, but I don't think its really worth it for the early games cause they aren't as good (in my opinion). I'd start with the games that were released for Windows. The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil was the first one made for Windows

You don't have to pirate as you can import them for around £20. Although most Doujins have demos to try out.

or this private seller who is the go-to man for alot of ppl on the shmups forum http://www.sk8tokyo.com/shmup/ although it appears rancor is closed for the next 2-3 weeks. Usually his store has a few freeware examples and demos you can download. I also highly recommed you buy Crimson Clover as it's widely thought as one of the best doujin shmups there is.

All the Touhou games will be in Japanese although most if not all have fan made English patches.

Due to the wishes of it's creator ZUN Touhow will never be sold in the west, however there are a number of English localisations to buy and play, some of the older localisations are on Steam however Greenlight has totally made it so no more doujins can get onto Steam again so you will have to get them elsewhere (search Nyu Media & Rockin Android)

The Exceed collection (esp the 3rd) is very similar to Touhou, infact due to it's faster more aggressive playstyle I prefer it to what Touhou STGs I've played.

Try Blue Wish Resurrection, BWR plus & Green Aegis all freeware and great for noobs to cut their teeth on bullethell.

So is Nyu Media's A tail of Altynex inc Kamui, Hydorah.

For me the best Touhou games are fan made spin offs in other genres (plus the Touhou VS fighting games) think of any popular Japanese game and I bet you there is a Touhou mod or a full game done in it's style. Including Touhou-vaders, Touhou-vania, Touhou-mon and a complete crapload of 2d platformers especially megaman sytled games. Alot of those are actually very fun to play if you are skilled at the genre.
