What with E3 bringing a heap of trailers to the fore, a worrying trend has appeared. People don't understand trailers. Now I don't mean this in a bad way. But most people look on to trailers to represent their conceptions about the game.
However...
Trailers are an Advertisement first and foremost, and it's not in an advertisers interest to appeal to an audience who are already all over the product like flies on shit.
SO...
Trailers will contain ample amounts of action, violence, peek-a-boo horror and genre humping music (music that screams "ACTION" or "SUSPENSE" or "SURPRISE" etc). They will take anything that is instantly recognisable, or has instantly gratifying results and then engineer the whole trailer around it. If the game is entirely devoid of action and is more atmospheric orientated, it will choose a piece a music, then edit the fuck out of the trailer so the camera does all the work.
As an example, fears that Deus Ex might become brown shooter number 5012 due to the first few trailers emphasis on gun play and violence, completely omitting the pacifists approach. Now, I have heard mixed things about the demos some have played, but that is besides the point... the trailer was meant to entice people other then fans already peaked by it's existence alone.
Now, I'm not going to add a silly poll to this topic, but I do have a question. What in your opinion, is wrong with this? Or do you disagree with me on my observation of trailers?
Let us discuss the implications of trailers, and what their role is within the gaming industry.
