I love the Hitman franchise to a fairly insane degree, but this is setting off quite a few alarm bells in my head. Provided I can still stealth through levels the way I could in the other games, I'll buy it. If it turns out they've dumbed it down or tacked on mandatory action sequences, I will not be happy. Don't fuck with the formula for perfection.
Hopefully they'll be scared off that idea by the massive backlash against the abortion that was Deus Ex: Revolutions Boss fights
They already responded to fan backlash by saying they won't be dictated by fans. So yeah...

For the love of gods lads, you've seen this trailer, plus seventeen minutes of the first level, which is very likely a tutorial. Now I'm a huge fan of the Hitman series. I think they're some of the most clever games ever made, and I had endless fun playing them through on a repeated basis and doing each level differently to the time before. As much as I'm worried by the cover system and the Instinct vision, and as irritated as I am by the lack of the old voice actors for 47 and Diana, there is no basis for writing the whole game off as a loss based on this extremely limited amount of footage. Talk about knee-jerk reactions like...

Well, I am torn.

On one hand, it was just a trailer.

On the other, it does seem like the last real Hitman game was already released some time ago...

Well, that doesn't particularly look like it will play as the Hitman games of the past did.

That being said, what I see looks fucking awesome. The stealthy cover system looks just as good as it did in Human Revolution, and the general banter between all the police officers was brilliant.

It may be a shame that we're all potentially losing the great gameplay of past Hitman games but at least they're being replaced by something that looks like it will be fun to play.

The atmosphere in the gamplay trailer was great, these awkward situations like running through a hippie place dressed as a cop, but that instinct crap bothers me as well. I don't know how long I spent on the map screen in the previous games... Don't wanna write it off for now, but my expectations are low.

And before some smartass says I don't need to use those: Why add those? The cover mechanics always fuck up stealth em ups. Don't hugging the wall increases your chance to be seen about 2000% (Hi Deus Ex: HR), the health will regenerate and kill any kind of tension.

always fuck stealth em ups? How did you play the old Hitman? because I certainly remember faceplanting myself against a wall looking like a fool to see around the corner and perhaps slowly nudging my way around a wall to get off a good shot.

Wow. They copy pasted the stealth mechanics from Deus Ex HR (sure like to save money don't you Sqeenix!) and gave 47 a see through wall augmentation...

Small portion of the game this maybe it still doesn't bode well at all. For one where's the charm? None of the kills were vaguely amusing or creative. At least be able to topple bookcases onto the guards or something.

I hope this is all wrong and the game is actually hard as nails and keeps it's trial and error approach. So far it's looking retardedly easy...

Blood Money spoiler ahead:
So it seems like he did die in the last mission and got replaced by this retard without a map.
Holy shit, this explains it.

Anyway, what royally pisses me off is how neither Bateson or McKee were asked back for the game. I found some info on the game, and honestly, this turns me off from the game. I ususally don't judge a game based on VOs and what not, but Bateson and McKee are the characters they voice. For me, bringing them back seems like a no-brainer. It's almost like not having David Hayter voice Snake in MGS4, or getting rid of Nolan North from Uncharted 3. They've become their characters, and this only serves to piss off loyal fans of the game.

b) I don't even know what you're really judging. Pretty much everything I've seen in the past installments makes a return in this game. What exactly are they omitting? I'veplayed the Hitman games, not too much is missing. I didn't see hiding bodies, but I would guess that its not exactly in the best interest of time to drag a body when there are thirty cops looking for you. That, and it really makes for a boring gameplay demonstration. If somebody demonstrated playing Fallout 3, they wouldn't loot every single body, would they?

c) The formula of the game is broken? I don't quite see how. Was it when you took the cop? Well, how else are they going to show off how to take a human shield? They're not just gonna grab one for shits and giggles, they're gonna show it has a purpose. He got up that initial stairwell without getting shot, didn't he? The helicopter thing, I can see where you're coming from there. But thats the only spot. I don't see how it adds in any way, really. I don't see that anywhere else.

d) You've yet to play the game. Speculate all you want, but never make a final judgment. I've done that before-"This game is gonna be great", and it sucked. Or "This game don't look to good", and it blew me out of the water. Hell, I first played Bioshock in a demo. the demo sucked man, it sucked. And I like Bioshock not just for the plot, but because of the gameplay too. It really paid off for me in that instance to keep an open mind.
We are not saying that it is instantly going to be a rubbish game because they've changed a few things, we're just worried that some of the mechanics they've implemented seriously seem to indicate a dumbing down in gameplay and less freedom to mess around in the levels, so the game may lose the style and originality that the franchise is famous and praised for.

They seem to borrow a lot of mechanics from other stealthbased games: Cover based mechanics from Deus Ex, human shields from Splinter Cell, detective vision from Arkham Asylum, bloomin' tag and execute from the latest Splinter Cell. These aren't neccessarily bad things, (apart from the Tag and execute, that can go die in a fire.) But the legitimate worry is that they will change the feel of the gameplay so the only thing it has in common with the previous games is the barcode on the back of 47's head.

The great thing about the previous games was working out all the ways you could stealthily kill your targets, the fundamental idea behind the game was that the best assassin is the one no one sees, who comes, kills only the target, and leaves without anyone noticing, although you also had the freedom to Rambo it up with a wide selection of fun guns if you felt so inclined. The worry we have is that in borrowing gameplay functions from these other games it will also borrow their restrictions on your ability to stealth through the missions, such as Deus Ex's flow breaking and much maligned forced boss fights, Splinter Cells Conv.s complete lack of any proper stealth at all (actually that whole game can go die in a fire) and the focus will move further away from poisoning food, throwing fuel cans down chimneys, running around dressed as a bell-boy etc. etc.

The game may be good, it may be bad, but it will definitely be a lot different from the previous games, and it's stupid to say that's not a legitimate cause for concern.

Go watch the full mission.

I don't know. On it's own merits, it certainly looks fun. I think it will be able to be a standalone stealth game.

It's just not very Hitman. Would have much rather had them start a brand new IP.

- No Agent 47 (as in the voice actor, David Bateson)
- No Diana (again, voice actor, Vivienne McKee)
- Only set in the US (loved feeling like an actual international assassin in the original games, and virtually seeing Russia, India, Japan, Saudi Arabia, South America...)
- Detective-Vision (would do fine if it was a different character, but come on; even the gameplay looks like arkham asylum.)
- No Map (I MEAN, COME ON, WHAT THE HELL; WHY WOULD YOU REPLACE THE BLOODY MAP WITH STUPID X-RAY VISION FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!)
- No manual save games ("ooh, instinct will make the game easier for new players, and not affect pro's--WELL TAKING AWAY THE SAVE FUNCTION MAKES IT DIFFICULT FOR NEW PLAYERS, AND DOESN'T DO A THING TO THE PRO'S, so you're talking out of your arse.)
- "Tag and Kill", and according to Wikipedia, that's something similar to tag and kill found in Red Dead Redemption, so, we've got Batman and we've got Rockstar. What next.
- No Jesper Kyd--WHAT?!! WHAT?!?!?!?! YOU GOT RID OF $*@%#@ING JESPER KYD?!!? THE COMPOSER OF THE AWESOME #$@#%ING MUSIC FROM SILENT ASSASSIN?!?! WHAT!?!

Anywho, I'll watch a few more videos before I declare that it sucks completely. Hell, it'll probably be an alright and functional game...

..just not a Hitman game.
Feels like what they did to Splinter Cell in Conviction.

But that's okay. I was skeptic as hell of conviction, but I fucking loved that game. Played through campaign a bunch of times because there was so much variety in the paths. Obviously not as much as Chaos Theory, but enough to make it fun and interesting while making it more fast paced.

Besides, when I want to play a stealth game I just pop Chaos Theory back in. It's still an awesome game. I beat Blood Money on Silent Assassin difficulty, the whole damn game. I think Absolution will offer new and interesting gameplay, and I'll be happy to try it out.

Aw come on, Conviction wasn't that bad. Yeah it was short, yeah it was different, but I really liked the side missions and multiplayer aspects. And for there not being stealth, I gotta disagree.

It kind of replaced the "not seen at all" stealth with "not seen during combat" stealth for the most part. I still managed to get through some of the side missions without having to kill more than 1 or 2 guys.

Also I only payed like 30 bucsk for the echleon edition on Steam. Gotta love sales.

[My ranting and raging]
First off, I wish to apologize for using this quote-reply method, but it's efficient. And I hate breaking my vow of not-replying to quotes...hm, quotes suck. Anywho!

And this wall of complaints, forumites, is why I bash my head into the wall when people judge a game based on a trailer, especially a theatrical trailer.
Forumites sounds insulting, just saying, there are some who are probably very proud of their heritage. Anyways, judging games based on trailers is now wall-bashing worthy? Let me tell ya', I enjoyed the trailer, it was Agent 47 kicking ass, and I loved it. My post consisted of worries related to the decisions the development team have employed, not the quality of the game based on the trailer alone. It reminded me a helluva lot of Arkham Asylum, and while I wish folks would be more creative with their stealth sections rather than going, "Hmm, well if Batman did it, it must be perfect!", I'm not going to criticize a system that works--or is at least fun and functional.

Have you actually gone and do that thing people do with games, what's the word... "play"? Have you played it yet?
No, but I haven't played a lot of other games I've decided I wouldn't like before I played them. I don't like the game right now because of the production decisions they made. I'm sure the gameplay will be just great, but it's perfectly alright for me to harbor a grudge until they prove their decisions were for the better. Pre-judgement is one of those things that is only human. If I look at a stove and decide to touch a hot burner, it would be perfectly justified for me to assume it'll burn my hand if it is turned on. Watching that trailer brings to mind various other trailers that show the exact same thing--only with pointy ears and a cape rather than a dashing black suit and red tie.

And where are you ever getting half of these things? Out of your ass?

[/Score!]

Anywho, next up.

They're not going to show every single feature in the game.
Of course not. It won't be until we play it that we determine the good and the bad.

And I understand being upset about a change in voice actor/actress, but that doesn't invalidate it as a member of a series.
Sure. After all, there have been hundreds if not thousands of times when an actor or actress, whether on-screen or in voice only, has been changed or removed. The question is sort of, "what's the cause". David Bateson was--is, a perfect voice actor (and actor), particularly for Agent 47, so why was he dropped?! I mean, just read what he said in regards to it!

DAVID BATESON said:
It?s not been a dull year so far. To all the fans of the computer game series Hitman, I am extremely disappointed to announce that after 11 years as the voice of Agent 47, I have been unceremoniously dropped from the franchise. May I take this opportunity to warmly thank all those who have written to me in support.

I really appreciate it and I only hope for your sakes, Hitman Absolution lives up to all our expectations. I am sure it will. I have been honoured to have been a part of such an incredible game.

For legal reasons, I cannot comment further at the moment.
I mean, come on! The poor fellow is disappointed! 47 was a great character, and fans of the Hitman games have come to look at the character -as- the actor! And visa-versa! Whenever you look at Arnold Schwarzenegger, you often think one of three things: "It's the Terminator!", "It's Conan!" or, "It's Arnold Schwarzenegger, IFBB Mr. Olympia seven times from 1970?1975 and again in 1980!"

Well guess what. When I hear Agent 47, I hear David Bateson. And I know many other people hear it as well--and I know many other people are completely indifferent. Maybe they just don't respect the series in the same way as the rest of us do. It's the same with anything that has a fan base--and I'm a fan.

So of course I'm gonna nitpick the new game that decides to change it all up, you goofball!

(PS, if you quote me, can you just copy and past instead of pressing the quote button? I hate wasting time doing this, but that '1 New Message!' text always forces me to respond whenever I check on Zero Punctuation. Cheers!)

Wow, they changed the voice actors and dropped the map?!! I wasn't too concerned about the changes until I heard that. The map is how I always strategized. The map is THE most important part of the game. Without it, I'm concerned that this will just be another spoon fed, hand holding video game. I like difficulty and thinking. Come on IO, I know you need you probably need some cash after those abysmal "Kane and Lynch" games, but don't alienate your fans by forcefully dumbing down your product.

It most likely uses a hybrid health system as the PC doesn't regen health from the fall/helicopter. I think that the instinct vision could be an option for people like me who find the AI of previous hitman games to be a bit unpredictable.
