The trailer reminds me a bit of the premise of Pan's Labyrinth.
A child escaping into fantasy to deal with real-life hardships. But at the same time you gain a creeping doubt at whether it is just fantasy or it is actually as real.
True a child in the Spanish Civil war is miles different from an alcoholic (possibly abusive) father. But it's still an idea of escapism.
