I remember reading about a workshop in a gaming con in which the speaker talked about how to find a game's main 'theme'. Essentially, it means narrowing down what your game means in a few words. Lacking one makes your game feel disconnected and weakens its atmosphere. Whenever you hit a snag in the design, be it in mechanics, graphics, story, what have you, ask yourself what choice better fits the theme and go with it.
