Trashed Laptop

So, long story short, I've had this awesome ASUS laptop for well over five years. Even after all it's problems, it's treated me well. Unfortunately, it has finally died, due to my own mistake. I thought I could save it but it is gone. What I wondering here is, how are you supposed to properly dispose of computer parts? I thought there is something specific that you need to do. As well, I'm wondering if I should still keep it. Sure, it's kind of just dead weight but it still looks pretty sweet and I can't just throw something away I've had for five years.

I know it's just a laptop and I'm not a hoarder or anything. It just feels like it's something I shouldn't just throw away. I want to see what other people think and I've always been curious as to how you're supposed to properly dispose computer parts.

You definitely shouldn't just throw it away. Anything digital should be recycled. Check online for a local electronics recycling program. I know my town offers one. Also check stores that sell large quantities of electronics to see if they have a recycling program.

Here you can drop them off in any electronic shop I think they're obliged to take them if you buy something there. Not too sure though, if in doubt just give it to a charity shop someone will probably buy it even if it doesn't work.

As has been said, it's probably best you don't just throw it away. You can always donate it, or eBay it...even if the mobo or something has failed, the rest of the parts can still be used, and it's almost certain that someone, somewhere has the same model as you and needs that CD drive, or that LCD...And they will go on eBay and give you cash for it. It's win-win.

I have a Acer laptop sat at home that suffered a huge software crash about two years ago that bricked it, but i refuse to throw it away. Initially i was going to try and get the thing repaired (the parts still work, aside from being OLD) but it turned out it was easier to simply replace it with a more modern PC.
But i still have it, i'm not a hoarder but i put many many hours of my life into it, it was a huge part of my life for a long time.
But yeah, it probably still has usable parts in it somewhere, why not give it to someone who is learning to fix computers or has use for the parts.

Here in Edmonton, there's a couple recycling stations that have computer graveyards. Find one in your town, they'll take it for you.

I'd grab a soldering iron and disassemble any cool looking bits like ICs. I have an awesome pair of 3dfx VooDoo2 Cufflinks....
