Trauma Center: Requested Opinion

I want to play through Trauma Team primarily due to the variety compared to it's predecessors. That said, I haven't played through the first one yet (well, more specifically, the updated wiimake of it). I'm thinking Trauma Team is pretty standalone due to the lack of Derek as the player character, is that true?

i never played the first one and i found it highly enjoyable. excellent story and i love the (sorta) twist at the end
there might have been some back story from the first one that i didn't notice but i'd say it's standalone
