Personally, I'm just about done leveling my first and likely only lvl 50 character in Rift. I left WoW after about 4 or 5 years, simply out of pure boredom, it was stagnant, repetitive and just not fun to play anymore......I'll be cancelling my Rift subscription before the first renew because it's pretty much already there (and a few social issues, not knowing ANYONE on the server is kinda detrimental and I know I wont have time to get into serious endgame Rift)

It was fun, for a bit, but yea, it's just too close to WoW, a new story and an interesting class system (the best feature) just aren't enough.

I'm sure it did steal subscribers, but I highly doubt it will keep them. Between Guild Wars 2 and SW:TOR I think there are just better options coming out for this year. I've played in the beta of Rift, and while it was a nice break from WoW, that's really all it was.

I wonder what's going to hapen when people get bored with Rift?Maybe like most theyll go back to WoW.Have you ever thoughed about that Trion
I don't know about you, but I'm waiting for The Old Republic to come out.

Rift seems like a lot of fun for now, but I don't think I'm going to be playing it longer than the 3 months I paid for. It's just something fun to do while I wait for Deus Ex and the other cool games coming out.

Or maybe they didn't so much steal their player base, but some of the Wow players, like a few people from my Warcraft guild, are using it as a time killer as we've cleared just about everything that needs to be done.

I've tried to take a look at Rift but the cocky attitude of devs is really off putting. It's a bit petty I know but I find it hard to even consider a game when it's entire advertising basis is that it wants to give blizzard the middle finger.

If it's a WoW clone like it touts itself to be them I'm sure its a good game, but I have no desire to play under the rules of devs who come off as smug douche bags.
They only did two pokes at wow. They have moved off it now and have started with a weather forecast about the rifts. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cld6TlTmUlE Its a nice mix of unique and intrigue based advertising.

Rift never intrigued me. The character models look like bland, typical D&D archetypes, and their ads always seemed a little TOO desperate to steal people from WoW (Join OUR Horde!). It's nice to see that something is surviving other than WoW, but if I really wanted more mmo-ing I'd stick to WoW.
Actually, the cloesest thing Rift has to the Horde is the Defiants.
And they're basically mad scientists/magicians.
The three races of the faction being a kind of Human that mostly lives in the Dessert and is known for making innovative machinery.
A group of elves who's island home was destroyed and they very much believe in "The end justifies the means".
And a muscular race of people who are the descendants of Humans and Air Elementals.
They only have one Capital city, and it's settled near a area of that used to be in the Gaurdians side but after their main town/city was attacked and taken over by the Undead from the nearby Iron Fortress which are now under command of a dead tyrant who used to rule over the town/city and nearby villages but was killed they only help they received was from the Defiants while the Gaurdians ignored their cries.

Not very much like Orcs...
I wasn't trying to imply they are, I just meant I've been on wowpedia with ads on the side for Rift that literally say "Join our horde".

While I know a few people who left WoW recently and are now playing Rift its not because Rift is so great and then can only afford to play one game at a time they left because of the direction the game is going which they no longer felt was the same place they wanted. (something about nerfs to bosses or somet idk I don't really play WoW that much)

While I like Rift(playing it right now), I doubt that it will be as successful, in the long run, as wow. But well, that's not for me to decide ... I'm still leveling and don't have a clue how the endcontent(the part that binds the longtime user to a game) turns out to be.

Thats a rather ballsy claim for any game company to just put out. I know competition is high, but to outright say " we stole these customers lol" is arrogant. It would be egg on their face if they fell to the same fate that befell Warhammer. Sure they may last slightly longer in the beginning, but they may faulter later on. Only WoW can kill WoW, and its already begun.

However the 4 almighty blades of Rift, Star Wars, Guild Wars 2 and Lord of the Ring have made cross around WoW throat, letting it slowly die of hunger and when it occasionally twitch hurting its self.

The swords equal the subs they are taking from wow.
The twitches are there design choices causing players to leave.

P.S I enjoyed making that metaphor.

While it's true that a large chunk of people I used to raid with on WoW are now subscribers to Rift, they didn't quit WoW because of Rift. They quit WoW because of WoW, and were hoping that Rift might offer them something. Like several of those same people, I've just decided I'm burned out on MMOs for awhile, and there wasn't anything special about Rift that changed that feeling.
This sounds familiar. I started back in WoW just last year and was in a fairly well-populated guild. Eventually though, all but three of the members left. Although I hear they are all playing Rift now, it wasn't because of that game that they left. Like myself, they basically just found that once you'd quickly plowed through the five levels of...levelling, there wasn't really much else to hold your attention.

As an aside, isn't it Rift the MMO which has some ads with the legend "We're not in Azeroth anymore"? I see what they did there.

Rift won't last long, it came out at a horrible time with TOR and GW2 coming out soon. I dunno about TOR, but GW2, being free to play, will end up sucking up a ton of subscribers. Probably enough to sink WoW.

Admittedly I did leave WoW for it, and I did enjoy Rift, however as usual I did go back to WoW.

I played Rift's 7 trial days at the insistence of a friend, and I have to say I liked it. Without that friend insisting that I try it though, I probably would have never touched it. Why? Their ad campaigns shamelessly reference WoW in a way that put a bad taste in my mouth. Still, if Rift truly is pulling that many subscriptions there may be something to it.

Meh, WoW players come and go. Most end up going back. Warhammer, AoC, and Aion have all taken subs away from WoW yet look how long they lasted. The only competitor is Guild Wars and thats still like comparing college (American) football to the NFL.

i have been playing wow since before it was released.

when rift came out i tried it for a month and before the month was up i was already uninstalling it, the only thing it has really got going for it over wow is its got a better PvP system at this point, i say at this point because wow had a similar one in the early BG days . Its crafting is confusing its talent tree system can claim to be unique in the fact that there are only 4 class's but many options in each of those class's but when you can swap builds really easy then its not so amazing anymore.

and that 600,000 number coming from wow is total BS, i know people playing rift that have not been playing wow for far longer then you can count against the current drop in there subscriptions, there are plenty of people who just stoped playing MMO's they did not move on yo another one.
