It's not all about being popular though. A lot of thought goes into picking the Red Guard and I can understand why. They don't want to pick people that the community likes, but rather someone who will run the community well. I can think of a few people who I would like to see in the Red Guard, but I don't see them being chosen anytime soon.

And ya, I remebered when you first joined. You were put on probation like once a week.

I said MaxtheReaper simply because a large portion of the site loved him. If we chose our mods democratically, I got a feeling he would get a good portion of the votes.

I didn't know RAK enough to nominate

Usually I'm tempted to post, but I realise that my post would consist mainly of anger. This puts the fear of the banhammer in me, so I just keep hitting the report button.

Newb here wondering how you determine what a "troll thread" is. Is it just a thread designed to make people angry, or what?
In a nutshell, yes. Basically they post something offensive or extrodinarily random, but insulting nonetheless, and then watch what happens.

Is this because of that one thread that reached eight pages yesterday?

I know it's best to just ignore them and let them die, but sometimes it's too much fun to just derail them and enjoy some madness until they get locked.

(Although eight pages is ridiculous).

I don't really mind who goes in the Red Guard, just as long as it's somebody! We really do need more mods, even if they're only temporary. I think that's the main reason the trolls have been increasing lately.

Yep, my suspension in December got me to clean up my act. I was a fucker before that.
I got to agree with that. Though I want to see someone who will be active, show good judgement and will not be afraid to punish someone. Those are good qualitites for a mod (At least in my eyes).

And yep, back then I kinda had the impression you wouldn't be with us for too long >_>

Ah. Thank you for the clarification.

Dear god that post was fun, it turned into a mix of bashing the 3 trolls(who all got permabanned) internet memes and a ton of other random stuff, it was epic!

I hate it when people post in it. It bumps it to the top and makes it active. And most of the time the posts are about how the thread is a troll thread. It gets really annoying.

I'll admit, derailing trolls is funny for awhile, but 8 pages is just insane. 2-3 pages tops. Preferably no more than 20 posts before the hammer swings. It's not always possible for that to happen, but the mods do the best they can.

It was fun to watch the night crew of the site come out in full force to do it, and it did take the mods a long ass time to lock the thing.

If those are the requirements I think I could do just fine as a Red Guard (Not trying to brag or anything) I just have this one problem though.

Im too new.
Ive been here, what? 9 months now? That's nothing compared to some people. And im actually still learning about this place. Im not a afraid to punish someone, im very active here, I would show good judgment. But im just not experienced enough to be one.

OT: There's a theory? I thought it was just a step by step process. Let me review:

Step 1: Locate the thread
Step 2: Find the troll
Step 3: Report and move on or send link to mod
Step 4: NEVER! I repeat, NEVER! Post in a troll thread, ever!

Amount of time doesn't make a diffrence to me. I see people who join in 2008 and only post or participate with the forum every couple months. They show that they don't really care enough to moderate the forums.

The theory I was refering to is more of why people post in troll threads at all, not "report and move on". That's the method for dealing with trolls.

As stated above, I think troll threads are like car crashes, and some people can't help but comment on it.

I must confess that I have posted in troll threads before, but that's just because if I see someone who is ignorant, then I just HAVE to explain my point of view. I just have to.

That's sometimes my problem as well. Usually it's to correct the logic problems the trolls making the threads have

This may or may not have been done before.

So, anyway. Troll Threads. We have all seen them, and we all know how to (hypothetically at least) deal with them. The standard "report and move on" is used, as is just ignoring the post. But how many people actually do that. How many people actually can go to a troll thread so obvious it's not even funny and not post their two cents, even if their two cents would just consist entirely of the word "reported"? I have found it very difficult to not post in those threads: it's kind of like when you see a horrible car accident or something silimarly horrific, you fear to watch, yet can't turn away. I think a similar thing happens with troll threads: there is an irresistable urge to say something, even if it's just calling the OP a troll. I don't know what causes it.

So, I ask unto you. How many have tried to go to a troll thread on purpose and NOT post something, but end up posting anyway? And how many just come to hit that big red button?

Discuss, please. (And feel free to add to the theory above, if you can be bothered to do so)
I don't. Once I posted that the thread could be a troll thread because I wasn't sure whether or not it was, but that's about as far as it gets.

Chalk it up to having greater impulse control than most people, and having ample time to think as I write. When I rant, I rant the shit out of something.

'pologies.

I accidentally made a troll thread once. (is that possible?) But I've learned from my mistakes, and moved on. To be honest, if something seems like a troll thread I just ignore it.
