Truely Miserable People

I was at work the other day and as usual I was going over in my head the sequence of events that led to my employment at the store Hell created when someone walked into my store that made my complaining seem like the adolescent whining that it was.

A woman came in who made me look at what it meant to truely be miserable. She came in trying to apply for a job but didn't know how to use our computer to apply and so when we had to turn her away she started talking about how she needed the money cause she didn't have anywhere to go and how hard it was for her to find a job.

After she left, I realized how lucky I was to have a job even if I do hate it with an all consuming rage and how lucky I was to have a roof over my head. So my question to you, The Escapist, is have you ever seen anyone who was so worse off that you couldn't help but realize how lucky you are?

You remind me of someone we used to know who would shout that, but follow it up with 'you filthy blacks!'. So not much sympathy there. Even if there were people on his lawn.

What is "wep key" and I hate New Orleans pizza, but that doesn't mean you have to eat it.

back on the OP topic, thats something people tend to forget. Lots of people have it worse than we do, and lots of us forget that. Its usually easy to see how bad things are for yourself, the trick is to be thankful for what you have.

Personally, I see people around me all the time that make me grateful for the life I've led.

It is the time of year for that kind of realization I think. It's a sad thing, a really sad thing, but it is also good to sometimes get slapped in the face with the realization you're glad to have the life that you do.

I haven't seen anyone recently that gave me the slap. I'm actually always pretty grateful. I think I'm one of few people who have a consistently good life (at least at the moment). But the other day my guy's mother was dragged into going to a church to pick up commodities. The friend actually needed to go to the church to pick up some of the free good but my guy's mother didn't really. Either way, they ended up saying she applied too and sent her off with bags of food stuffs. When she brought it home we were all a little disgusted to see that most of the items were past their sell by date, about to expire in a few days, or well over expiration. Me, pregnant and all, gave everyone a scare by accidentally eating yogurt over two weeks expired.

I realized though, that while we were tossing this stuff out like a bad habit, most of the people who received stuff like this wouldn't. They wouldn't have a choice, something is better than nothing, and would have little problem (at least at first I suppose) devouring nearly expired food. I'm glad I live the kind of life where expiration dates matter. Not everyone is so lucky.

You should watch FullMetal Alchemist. Also how is a cranky old man all that miserable other than the fact he has to deal with kids on his lawn he should be pretty happy.

Oh, so its some special lightning infusion of terror etched onto his skull? I seriously have little time or patience for anime. Well, after a full lifetime of hardships and 'chilluns running around, he shouldn't have to deal with them in his final years of peace. Along with the fact that elderly people tend to have little patience for anyone loitering on their lawn.

I see what you mean but he has lived a pretty good life and he also has a roof over his head with a sweet lawn to match so I wouldn't call him miserable just sensitive about who steps on his lawn.

A homeless person with a sign that said "Trying to save up for a hooker - Please help" Both made me laugh, give the guy a 20, and realize how lucky I am yet this guy was being far more optimistic then I was. (At least, I guess I took it as optimism).

Yes, it could be sensitivity, but I don't really meet sensity, old men, if at all really.

Most of the people that are miserable that I know, are mainly like that to attract attention from others. This allows them to feel wanted, but this want for attention is misery, or depression, in its own degree. It is just like dear old Hamlet, if you try to pretend to be something you're not, you may end up as that very thing.

Wow! If anyone is bold and desperate enough to have a sign like that must be one truly miserable SOB. I mean this guy is practically advertising how lonely he is in order to get money. He is not only miserable but smart and funny.

I hate people who care about their silly lawns so much :p Especially when the lawn is a shitty, dried out, brown mess.

Oh I see now, his constant complaining is merely a cry for attention to help him deal with his overwhelming loneliness.
