Will cut to the point - recently, I have gotten a strong urge to re-read a book from my teen years, but for the life of me, I cannot remember the name, and Google has spurned me with irrelevant page after irrelevant page of misinformation. Just to be clear, in order to help out, I will be going through the main theme of the book, which will contain essential spoilers to the story. Just a fair warning. :p

Now, the book is a bit of a mix between mystery/drama, sci-fi, and the supernatural. It starts with a teenage boy, being woken up by his alarm, to find that everyone around him has disappeared. He lives on the outskirts of a city (I believe New York), and heads into the city to try and find others. The city is deserted, too, but after finding a boombox, he plays music, and manages to find a company of another guy, and two girls around the same age.

They do a bit of surviving, a bit of soul-searching, and predictably, two couples emerge as they begin to become familiar with each other. The story concludes after the city, inexplicably, begins to crumble around them, and they begin having a hard time breathing as they attempt to run away from the deteriorating state of the city around them.

A wormhole (or w/e) opens up near them at the end, and a bunch of scientists emerge from it, capture them, and I seem to recall they were taken back to earth. It is revealed, that the four teenagers have strong will-powers, to the point where if they believed in something hard enough, their beliefs would become reality. Because of this, they were kidnapped, and brought to either Mars or the Moon, in order to use their minds to terraform the planet/moon, and establish a functional city for them to work from. Since they went to sleep, and woke up later, believing they were still in their homes, it all became reality when they were brought to Mars/the Moon.

But as they began questioning the reality around them, and where everyone disappeared to, the illusion was broken, which is what resulted in the experiment being a failure.

Those are the essential highlights of the story. If anyone here can enlighten me as to the name of this book, I would be very grateful. Thanks in advance!

Haha - I was hoping for a semi-quick revelation, since I am about to head out of town for a couple/few days. When I get back, if no one has replied, I will try and bump this thread again (if allowed).

Sorry man, I'm googling over here, but nothing's really come up. Sounds familiar. Unfortunately, New York + Wormholes searches just gets me Avengers as the result. I'll keep trying though.

What timeframe are we talking about for your teenage years? And was it a young adult book or was it geared toward adults?

@Foolery - I have been feeling that same pain for the past while, now. :p Appreciate the assistance.

@twistedmic - I am a 90s child - 1991, specifically. I believe I read this book somewhere between the ages of 14-17. As for the audience the book was reaching for, I would say young adult - around the same tier of writing as books such as Cirque Du Freak and Artemis Fowl.

Sadly, I don't know it either, and I am a sci-fi buff. If you find it out, let me know what it is, 'cause now I wanna read it.

Not really sure how the quality would line up these days, to be perfectly honest - I could just be using nostalgia to justify my renewed interests. :p Regardless, I will definitely share the book's name with you if I am ever able to re-discover it.

This is a long shot, but could it be the Last on Earth [http://www.goodreads.com/series/61261-last-on-earth-series] Series by Marilyn Kaye?

I read the description, and thought that was it. Even more, I was amazed that the book I read was just the beginning of an actual trilogy, which excited me quite a bit, I will admit. But then I looked up a few passages, and, unfortunately, this/these is/are not the book/s that I am looking for. :(

But thank you so much for that information - I am going to look into those books and give them a try!

It wouldn't happen to be Shade's Children by Garth Nix... would it? Because I remember reading that and the description does seem to match up to a pretty decent extent.

Maybe the Pendragon series? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pendragon_Adventure
Seems to fit some of the descriptors you gave.

Edit:Ryallen's suggestion of Shade's Children does seem closer.

Definitely not Pendragon - but I appreciate the suggestion. Still have those books, actually.

A great book - but not what I am looking for, I am afraid. For everyone reading, keep in mind that there are only 4 real characters in the book that I am looking for, until the very end when the scientists show up, and the book takes place almost entirely in a single city.

Still searching on my end, too.
