So there was a game back in the day on the game boy that was sort of a cross of a RPG and a fighting game where you wandered around fighting other people with a customizable remote control robot. I can't remember the name of it for the life of me. Someone suggest custom-robo but the GBA version(which I'm pretty sure is what it was on) was never release state-side and I remember seeing it in stores here. The robots looked similar to mega-man without actually being mega-man.
