this has to be one of the most bizarre con experiences I've ever heard of. This is what happens when you have a bunch of amateurs thinking they can handle something this serious. Conventions have to be run efficiently, no matter how small.
Perhaps it's a little harsh to speak of the entire community, it may be wiser to stick with the vocal part of it. It is the vocal part who rolled with all of this. Though I must say, looking at the actions of the attendees, the people who bought into all of this... The naivete of it all, it's staggering.ayvee said:Dude you're projecting the actions of a group of organizers who turned out to be incompetent and/or scam artists with people who are only associated with them via shared interests.Cowabungaa said:I was talking about certain Tumblr communities that most definitely act like that. And it just so happens that those communities are what this convention was from and for. And look where their way of thinking got them in an actual real world thing, when it's about more than making textposts on your blog.erttheking said:I wasn't under the impression that most people on Tumblr were thought like that.
I just dove into the Dashcon tag and oh god it's a hoot. That ball pit is becoming a meme all of its own it seems.Martintox said:I can tell you one thing: on Tumblr, we're having a goddamn field day with all of this. I have a picture of this ball pit as my wallpaper, and I just found out that they might actually be putting out a recording of the whole ordeal on DVD [http://www.dashcon.org/dashcon-2014-dvd/]!
*dies of laughter*bdsm 101 was a fucking train wreck
i can?t believe they seriously did /that/
i thought they?d only talk about safety and other shit but. a fucking demonstration had to be done

No truer words have ever been spoken. If it broke out into a west side story gang war with a convention across the street involving impromptu singing and flashing videos and memes at each other on their iPads and phones it would've been complete.Karadalis said:Sounds about right for a Tumblr convention.
So all in all a great success

Enjoy that feeling of schadenfreude my friend! It is a powerful elixir that revitalizes the spirit, and that ball pit might as well be the Holy Grail. At least it hasn't reached Kony 2012 proportions... yet. I just wish there was an equally disastrous 9gag convention across the street from them at the time and they ended up bickering with each other. Something about watching middle schoolers and older teens going at it over banal internet drama and mutual incompetence really stirs my inner crotchety old man, possibly involving lawns.Cowabungaa said:Perhaps it's a little harsh to speak of the entire community, it may be wiser to stick with the vocal part of it. I suppose I'm getting a little too much enjoyment out of those. It's all so typical, it's the sort of thing anyone with a distaste for Tumblr's vocal part predicted and now it's all coming true. You don't see things like that being played right in your hands very often.
In the end it's mostly sad though. $60 per ticket, thousands of dollars, poof. Here's hoping they all learned from it. Kids often do stupid shit, it usually just doesn't end in disasters costing thousands of dollars.

And I love me a good Arrested Development reference.

You can look at all the "sexually explicit" events, along with the rest of them, here:harrisonmcgiggins said:Hold on, sexually explicit events at a convention?
That just peaked my interest
That DVD will be fetched for a million dollars in the future. Mark my words.Martintox said:I can tell you one thing: on Tumblr, we're having a goddamn field day with all of this. The PROBLEM is that the SJW's and activists ON tumblr make the MOST POSSIBLE NOISE THEY POSSIBLY CAN in hopes that they continue to represent themselves as the forefront of tumblr. And until that part of tumblr has its face stomped in and is put in a cage where it belongs, so shall the public and detractors continue to identify tumblr as being nothing but a place for radical activism to fester and grow. Tumblr is full of new age hate speech that favors censorship, attacking people with false accusations and slander and frequently is guilty of hypocrisy with what they say.ayvee said:First of all this is hilarious (though unfortunate for anyone losing money on it) and the internet is having a ball with it--including and especially Tumblr.
But please for the love of god Escapist Community, can we get past this idea that Tumblr as a whole exists as some hivemind of social extremists who lurk in the proverbial shadows to pounce on anything they think will drum up controversy. Because unless you're making an active effort to turn your user experience into those things, Tumblr is cat pictures, food porn, actual porn, and anime gifsets.
Which are incidentally what this con was basically supposed to be.
I think that's pretty dubious. I hear way more about "extreme SJW-types" when people complain about them in places like this than I ever do, well, anywhere else. If someone can direct me to where all of these people are congregating to make so much noise in such a way that you come across it without seeking it out, then please do so. Until then, I maintain that such claims are drastically overstated.Kyogissun said:The PROBLEM is that the SJW's and activists ON tumblr make the MOST POSSIBLE NOISE THEY POSSIBLY CAN in hopes that they continue to represent themselves as the forefront of tumblr. All in all, I really wish this part of the site would go away, as I miss the place it used to be... a minimalistic blogging website for nerds to share shit with each other and socialize without all the invasive features of facebook. But much like the many movements they co-opt so frequently, SJW's co-opted tumblr as their new gathering grounds for their bullshit.
Fuck the new age radical activism and 'social justice' plaguing that website. Fuck said people who spout hate speech under the guise of 'social justice' and fuck them for hijacking what used to be a safe haven of small scale socializing.

For the sake of not seeming like I don't want to start a witch hunt or seem biased, I'm not about to link or name specific tumblrs/people/places off the bat. But the hate speech I see ranges from the generic comments of 'This is why I am mad at this group of people and why my anger is justified' to 'Group X should die because of Y'. And if it isn't one group attacking anotherayvee said:I think that's pretty dubious. I mean, I see it on my dashboard all the time, OFTEN reblogged by people who had their posts reblogged BY said activists/SJW's and hijacked with said hate speech... And more often than not, these people who had their content hijacked are either A: telling these people to stop reblogging their content and twisting their words or B: responding with rebuttal and arguing with said SJW's about why they're wrong in their radical mentality.
But as I stated, this minority is an extremely vocal one which likes to represent itself AS the majority of the site and tends to keep to itself, hugboxing and circle-jerking with each other and facilitating more hate speech and such. But really, there's a healthy amount of discussion of this radical activism on the site itself... And as a frequent user of it, I can tell you these claims are not drastically overstated.
You DO have to seek it out but only because of how the blogging system WORKS on tumblr. You 'have' to pursue the content and it's BECAUSE of this exclusivity that reblogging on tumblr encourages that it's just not as blatantly obvious to the public as it should be.
So yeah, I can assure you it is there... But in the interest of my ideals to not partake in the same actions as these people I'm criticizing, I'm not about to name/identify anything specific.
