TV News Report Warns of "Cyber-Bullying" on Xbox Live

Keep an ear open when your kids are playing COD, or they might hear a dirty word.

Here's the short summary: Some parents just figured out that online gaming platforms like Xbox Live and the Sony Entertainment Network are a hive of villainy and bad words. An ABC News report from KABC in Los Angeles ran a report on the foul language and bullying that can go on while Junior is playing Call of Duty. A parent who regularly games with his sons is appalled by the level of profanity he encounters shooting bad guys with automatic weapons and the report shows how to shield your spawn from the barrage of bullying.

"Incredible levels of profanity, racial epithets, homosexually-oriented epithets. We're talking 8-, 9-, 10-, 11-year-old kids who are getting exposed to this regularly," said Kevin Roberts, author of the book Cyber Junkie.

A father of several boys, Matthew Kinney, said it's important to listen to what you're kids are hearing from other players. "Don't let your kid go upstairs and close his bedroom door, and sit there and play all night," he said. "That's crazy. You have no idea what's going on, who's saying what."

Finally, "Internet Safety Expert" Parry Aftab said that it's possible this profanity has no bearing on winning the game, but is simply meant to hurt the other players. "They may trash talk. They may be calling you names. They may steal their passwords. Or a lot of them may gang up on one online, not because it's a good strategic win, but to hurt the other person," said Aftab.

Aftab made sure to mention that Microsoft has teams meant to police their online service. "They have an Xbox LIVE enforcement squad that is one of the best enforcement groups looking for grooming activities and online sexual predators, as well as cyber-bullying," said Aftab.

As much as I would hate to have my parents with me when I was playing videogames as a child, I kind of see where these warnings are coming from. All of the swearing and homophobic comments I've heard - even when playing an innocuous game like War in the North on Steam - is a big reason why I don't like playing multiplayer. Some kids don't have the willpower or strength to have a tough skin to shake off potential abuse when they are 8 years old. Until they learn to play more civilized games like Magic, it probably isn't a bad idea for parents to pay attention to what is being said over the headsets.

And threaten to beat up any gamer who says the word "Boobies."

Seeing as how the WORST players I've met online sound like 8 year old...

Maybe parents should parent their kids before bitching about others'.

This is pretty much the truth.

Also...isn't CoD (and other multiplayer games where people would have mics) rated M? I mean...why would you have your 8 year old kids playing that in the first place?

Not saying that because a game is rated M, that gives people free reign to spew verbal abuse on whoever draws their ire, but it's kind of...yeah.

They've only just figured this out? Really? I've known about this for years. Most of us have.

They are just now realizing that anonymity+internet=ability to say/do whatever they want???

Why that's just absurd....

And what, prae tell, is the most stereotypical view of an XBOX-live player? An angry, swearing twelve year old. Yeah, I don't think it's the adults that are the problem. Nor the twelve year olds. *leers at parents*

"You don't say!"

Do any parents even read the ratings for games these days? It's really just plain sad. I mean, what are they thinking letting their kids play CoD or other games like that? I know, I know, gaming doesn't incite violence, etc., but do they still need to experience that at such a young age? What happened to the parents that said, "What's it rated? R? I'm afraid you'll have to wait 'till your older to go see that movie." When it comes to games, suddenly it seems like parents began thinking, "Oh, video games? Well, 'game' is in the title, so it must not have any objectionable content."

Frankly, I'm glad that my parents made me wait. <3

Pretty much this.

I hold the single worst thing about non-competitive online gaming right now to be live voice chat.

"M" rated game. Also includes: ESRB warning, content may change online.

End of discussion.

I think we need to be very careful making sure we don't equate *any* negative interaction a child could have with full-on bullying, lest we dilute the term so much it lacks meaning anymore. There`s a world of difference between being beaten up in the school parking lot during lunch hour and being swore at on a service that you can opt in and opt out of at any time by players that you have the option to mute.

And I fully agree that 8-year-olds shouldn't be playing CoD, online or off, to begin with.

SEE: My previous post.
Parents don't parent, they only get mad at others.

This.
Why the hell is your 8-year old playing Call of Duty?.
You think he is mature enough for violent games and realistically protrayed violence, but not to hear crude remarks?

Sh*t your poorly parented eight year old says.
I love how all of us get it, pretty much ever single gamer who has played an online game gets it, but parents don't.
This article would be pretty common back in maybe... 2001, but these days, what the fuck.
Are parents THAT stupid to only find this out now?
I knew parents these days are stupid, but holy fuck...

Also, I agree with every post above me, but won't quote you to save on space.

ATTENTION PARENTS: letting your kids watch porn when they are 8 years old, is not good for them. Also, don't let them watch Chris Rock when they are 7. What else is obvious as shit... Oh! Don't let your kids watch Jackass, The Hangover, Role Models, etc. etc.

What the what? It is those kids who are the ones spouting it because the parents throw COD in front of them to act as a babysitter, don't teach them right from wrong, nor punish them for bad behavior. I'm willing to bet they learned most of it from their parents, and suppliment it with what they pick up online. OH MY GAWD SHOCKER!
