Typing Sarcasm on the Internet

Surely it's not sarcasm if you point out that it's sarcasm. It's like adding 'NOT!' to the end of a sentence.

Sarcasm is meant to be subtle.

When we type its hard to get the point across that were being sarcastic so my thought is why dont we find out a way to show we are being sarcastic?

So post your suggestions on what we could do to show sarcasm on the internet.

My Suggestion is how bout we type it out like this [Sarcasm] [Sarcasm]

What a fablous idea. Everybody needs sarcasm pointed out to them and it will not render the impact of sarcasm impotent at all.

I like the look of italics otherwise you usually have to word your sarcasm correctly. Its the same with joking in a funny voice. A female friend of mine took a picture with two hot german chicks on facebook & I replied 'Im going to germany' as in for the girls but she literally thought I was gonna go to germany. How it sounds in my head sounds different other peoples heads.

It shouldn't be, and if you're a good enough writer your "voice" should be able to be a clear indication of it.

But then again, I was kicked off another forum I use to lose cause some dumbass ***** who was a high functioning autistic accused me of disrespecting the mentally handicapped when I wasn't. Everyone there knew I wasn't. But the highpriest **** of the forum decided to take the opportunity to rip me a new one.

I wasn't banned, but suffice to say I moved over to The Escapist after that.

I think it's pretty clear when someone is being sarcastic on the WWW.

Itatalics seem a pretty good way to hint what whatever you're aying is sarcastic, too.

I do find I need the opposite though. A "I'm being serious" mark. My mother in particular accuses me of being sarky in emails and texts when there's absolutely none of that subtext at all. Nnngh.

If I'm trying to be obvious about it, I use caps or italics on certain words to get the emphasis and inflection across.

I usually prefer to be deadpan, though. People taking me seriously makes it funnier.

I just type '/sarcasm' after whatever sentence I have written that I intend to be interprited as sarcastic.

Example;
Then again I might not need it, since interpreting voice inflections over text is something everyone can do anyway. /sarcasm

People who fail to realise that infuriate me, though. It's fucking text, I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not without it being obviously pointed out.
Actually some people fail to vary their voice when trying to convey sarcasm while speaking, too. I guess some people just suck at vocal subtleties.

I wish more people would label their sarcasm appropriately
More than once I got put on probation for asking people if they were being sarcastic, or reverse trolling

Personally I use the [sub] tags and say "I'm being sarcastic"

When I'm being sarcastic, I use CAPSLOCK and discuss religion.

If I remember correctly, someone did make a "sarcasm mark" that you add to a sentence, like a normal piece of punctuation, to denote sarcasm.
But, of course, they were/are running it like a business. So you have to pay to get that sarcasm mark and use it.
I think it was some obscene price, as well, just for a single piece of punctuation they made up...
wonder if anyone bought it...

I remember learning about it when I posted a similar thread here.

In anycase, everyone is just too lazy to adapt to a standardized sarcasm mechanic and thus the misinterpretation of comments will continue.
