I thought they pretty much dissolved the foreign legion? If they haven't it's a small part. Either way, its not good PR for your nation to make non-citizens from other nations die for your country.. its like.. outsourcing your military.
They got three regiments of the Foreign Legion, who are the second best regular military unit (meaning not including special forces) following the British Royal Marine Commandos. They keep a constant presence in Africa including several major peace-keeping operations, such as one in the Ivory Coast. They are the best the French Military has to offer, and they could kick the arses of most other nations militaries (including the Americans and Germans). I don't know about the rest of the French Army, but the Foriegn Legion kicks arse.
I was thinking about going to France and joining, but I'd get paid better in the Australian Army.
