Why should the us government have the authority over the internet in the first place? It's not like it's theirs.

If you remember, the president also has the red telephone 'kill switch' on his desk too, and that hasn't been used.

I guess this would be a bright red laptop?

Neither can we stand idly by and allow this sort of insult to occur. Talk about cock-slapping the free economy. Requiring companies to partake in this? And I'm guessing they'll have to pay some sort of dividend FOR this "information sharing." Sounds like the govvies are trying to rake up some more cash to pour into their stupid fuckin' war.

Oh, Lieberman! What zany right-wing paranoid fear-mongering will you bring us next? And, more importantly, what civil liberties crushing solution will you propose?

Gut miranda rights? Check. Deny accused criminals other basic rights? Check. Pave the way for a government seizure of the internet? Check.
I could have sworn Lieberman was an Independent Democrat. So wouldn't he be left wing? Or is that the problem? I haven't paid much attention with politics, they've increasingly made me jaded and depressed.
He's whatever the lobbyists want him to be...

Damn right!

How amazingly self-centred of them... That would disrupt internet commerce the world over!

I'm all for increased levels of security online... but that's just going way too far.
Agreed...how can they think they can control peoples freedoms...this is such a stupid idea...and, I really hope the bill will. Not. Pass!

He lost the Democratic primary here in Connecticut and started his own party (it has since repudiated him - which has got to hurt since it had his name in its title). He supposedly caucuses with Democrats but campaigned for McCain and can always be relied upon to support knee-jerk conservative responses (both regarding national security and "morals").

Fortunately, his chances of being reelected at this point are about the same as BP being named the this year's most environmentally friendly corporation.

So he's basically That Guy. I don't even want to know how long he's been in office, it's bad enough Michele Bachmann is in there.

Ahahahah, people already want to get the Root DNS [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Root_nameserver] servers out of just the US. An idiotic bill like this would just speed up the process.

Silly Lieberman, you couldn't get rid of video games, and there's no way you can shut off the Internet.

For those who don't know, Lieberman is our equivalent of Australia's Michael Atkinson. He's been on an anti-violent video game crusade for as long as I can remember. He's also among the first political figures I remember hating as a teenager for his anti-gaming bile.

That's not the US government.
That's Joe Lieberman.
I doubt anyone takes the guy seriously.
Not a clue who he is (I'm British), but if that's the case then I retract my cock-sucking statement and issue it directly to Joe Lieberman.

Um.... China anyone?

Free exchange of information. Yeah, there are risks, but that just means you buy a better firewall. This is the sort of thing I'd have expected from the Bush administration. I feel betrayed that a Dem brought it up.

I like how the fines are basically a way of keeping the angle that they still have the right to refuse it. Regardless, this is a joke, and I just can't imagine that they don't understand how many people this would affect!

This.
I don't even live in the US, they have no right to turn off the internet for every single fucking country in the world.

Yeah, I have to agree with some of the above responses.

In a "time of crisis" I'm not sure if shutting down a global communication network is a wise course of action.

Oh, what's that? It's in case the internet is attacked by cyber-terrorists?

...

Sounds like a good idea for a movie.

Just wait till the cyber-viruses hit and FEMA institutes martial law.

Mr. Lieberman, you wouldn't happen to be good friends with a Walton Simons, would you?
