What the hell exactly is a "cyber-9/11"? Viruses slamming into the presidents finest selection of digital pornography?

Well, I'd support a US only killswitch, or any other government having a local internet killswitch, but if the US government somehow thinks that they are in control of the entire internet, I think about 7200000000 other people have something to say about that.

As an American, I am one of the few who have the right to tell me government to fuck off.

My government,

Fuck off.

Yours truly,

Or they could just, you know, shut off access to gov't/utility computers from the internet...instead of pulling the plug all across the U.S. I think we're smart enough to do the same if we come under attack from cyber terrorists or whatever. No need for Uncle Sam to hold our hands.

Wait.... What? A kill switch? Would there be warning beforehand or would we just be told "We're Turning off your Internetz! HA!"

Actually, part of me hopes they don't give out a warning, like if someone is watching a *Ahem* certain Genre of video and just as it actually starts doing what *ahem* it promises... BOOM! You have no internet!

Calumon: I hope this doesn't catch on.
well thank the lord for buffering videos then :D

OT I wouldn't find it quite as bad if they hadn't said it was only for the US's protection, yeah lets bugger it for god knows how many countries, just to protect our own asses.
Even if this was a necessity the US is the last country i'd give the power to, not exactly renowned for keeping a level head amongst even minor crises' o.0

EDIT: Even if it is only across the US that is still way too much power, think of internet banking for starters o.0

HA! Loving the mocking, Mr. Chalk. Cyber-this and Cyber-that

Mr. Government,
[/i]You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means[/i]

OT: Is this just for the US? Cus I'm questioning why they would have any right to turn off British internet, considering A) They HAVE no right and B) We technically invented it
Nah we didn't. AS much as I'd like to say that the internet is british, it isn't. The innovations are mainly American. A Brit did invent the WWW, but they are two seperate inventions.

Anyway, on topic: I too particularly liked the bit about "as well as critical internet components in other countries." Thanks, America. Nice to see your trying to be the fucking world police. I doubt this makes it into law though. But still, this is ridiculous, "WE WILL CONTROL THE WORLD! And we shall start with teh internets."

The Military could not support this nonsense. Cutting off all access to the internet would kill pretty much every common communication tool with a range greater than say, 300 miles. No real-time maps, no up-to-date cross-system references, no tech manuals, no access to personell files, no MRC chat, limited ways to coordinate air-strikes between services...it would turn the entire DOD on its damn head. The pentagon would just an especially ugly building.

And then we have the wonder parts that would allow the government to request information from any company that uses the internet as part of its business model...without justification. For shits and giggles, if you will.

Leave it to the Americans.

They would never be able to do this, other nations would go apeshit.

Well, think about it. If you make more security, hackers will find new ways in. close those, they'll find more. Hackers get into the pentagon's network, suddenly the world has thousands of nuclear missiles aimed at it by a fat sweaty geek who lives in his mom's basement. wouldn't it be nice to have a killswitch then? or maybe some pet uber-virus gets loose. sure, the idea needs refining, but it could potentially be very helpful.

Ummm what? Can't they just unplug the cables at the pentagon if they're worried?

There you go, safe from all that nasty cyber...stuff.

Most of us wouldn't be able to do our jobs without the internet. This would collapse the economy if it was initiated. I know that this is an emergency procedure, but it's like preventing us from starvation by hanging ourselves.

Oh, and Joe is an independent, so the next time you bash mainstream political parties, just recognize that he doesn't have one.

This is a failiure. The internet is wild. It is free. It is what promises humanity's success. The internet is what allows peace, homogenizes culture and brings people from across the planet together. It prevents nations from closing borders and spills the secrets of nations. The internet prevents us from being able to be agressive, and favors us to be loving. The internet in many ways exists more than you or I. The internet is a miracal and a blessing, and no man should be able to deminish it's power.

We must be able to stop them! The only way is give us complete control so you can be safe.. Please give us your bank account details and password when paying the bill that gives us the money for our plan.. I mean scheme! Wait, no, scheme is good.
