Ubisoft Addresses Disappearing Characters in The Division

The Division's new update deployed yesterday, causing some players to lose their characters.

Players have been reporting significant issues following yesterday's hefty update [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/167134-Broken-Dailies-in-The-Division-to-be-Fixed-with-April-12-Patch] for The Division. Update 1.1 hit yesterday, bringing with it promises of addressing the "infinite loading/backpack issue," a host of fixes, including missing daily missions, and the introduction of Incursions, gear trading, and a host of other fixes and features.

Unfortunately it hasn't been smooth sailing since the update went live, with some players reporting the disappearance of characters. Gamers have taken to both the forums [https://www.reddit.com/r/thedivision/comments/4ehmc8/character_wiped_after_patch_on_xbox_one/] to report the issue.

An update on the forums [http://forums.ubi.com/showthread.php/1432215-An-update-on-the-Missing-Characters-issue] states that the team has identified and fixed the issue, and that characters are able to be restored. You can read the full update below:

"Agents,

Some of you reported that their characters went missing after Update 1.1. Our team has identified and fixed the source of this issue to ensure that your characters could be correctly restored.

The issue was caused by a malfunctioning server that couldn't synchronize character data correctly and corrupted them instead. The game client was unable to read this corrupted data, and simply assumed that the character didn't exist. Once this has been identified, we were able to restore the server to its normal functions, thus ensuring that the issue will no longer occur for other players.

For those who experienced the issue: your character is not gone. We are currently working on a fix that should make it available shortly. Implementing this fix will require a server downtime, and we will let you know when we are ready to perform it.
Please note however that in order to make your character available, we will need to restore the latest uncorrupted save of your entire account, which happened during the server maintenance of April 12. In other words, your character will be back just as you left it on April 12 at 9am CEST | 3am EDT | 12am PDT. You will lose any progress made on this character or any other one from the same account between April 12 and the next maintenance.

We apologize for the inconvenience and want to thank you for your understanding and your help in identifying this issue.

The Division Team"

Wow. That's...that's kind of a big thing to miss in QA, you'd think. I mean, say what you will about The Old Republic, and how they have issues with bugs introduced by patches, but they haven't had any patches delete or corrupt characters, requiring a fix for that.

Can you imagine being the poor bastard who was affected by the backpack glitch and came back to have his character erased only to be told that any progress he made before the roll back would be erased? How livid would you be if that was the case?

Got a game breaking bug and I can't play anymore. Good thing Ubisoft knows and is working on the problem. They're not releasing the patch until the 12th along with the free incursion? Well I guess I'll be behind gear wise, but I can make up for it with crafting, oh wait they neutered crafting. Well I can just buy some Dark Zone gear after another two levels. Why is my character not there? I can't find him! Ubisoft knows about this again? I'll get it back eventually, but now I can't play AGAIN because any progress I make will be erased?

I'm done, but that would seriously fucking suck.

At this point you know what you're getting into. Buying a newly released Ubisoft game will end exactly one way.

Not including anyone new to gaming OFC, but no-one else has the right to expect respect for Q&A. The beta testers will point out the flaws, and the beta testers will be ignored.

Gotta love Ubishit. First they release a patch that breaks a bunch of stuff, wait till the next major patch to release an update to fix them, then in that update break some more stuff. I see two main issues:

1. They don't care about fixing issues in a timely manner
2. They don't test their patches
