I personally don't think Ubisoft care, about anything. Customers, games, THEMSELVES! I have come to the conclusion that ubisoft is run by masochists and wants to run itself into the ground so that it no longer has to work! That explanation works suspiciously well...

Pretty soon everything will have to explained through a bloody unskippable ingame tutorial, heres how to save, heres how to turn off the console, heres how to....argh!

Ubisoft treat their people the same way. If they can dump someone to save money (which actually means
to keep the suits wealthy), they will do it. Next, they will get rid of the disk.

I think the actual reason behind this decision is simply to cut back on the costs of producing the retail version of games. If they really wanted to do something for the environment, they'd cut back on the amount of plastic used in game boxes. Y'know, go to the size that's used for music CD's, instead of the larger boxes used for games.

I'm also looking at you, Nintendo! There was nothing wrong with the paper boxes of 'ye olde consoles'. I understand the need for plastic with GC and Wii discs, since it offers better protection, but why would you put DS cartridges in plastic as well? They might just as well be paper boxes...

For everyone claiming this is better for the environment, the paper for those manuals comes from tree farms not lost Amazon jungles or whatever other incredibly expensive enviro fantasy you've got.

For everyone claiming this isn't a loss, lets add up the facts.
Without a manual you have to wait for a game to install then sit through unskipable tutorials because morons can't find the pdf version.
With a manual you read it while the game installs then party.

Manuals have been getting thinner and black and white but that isn't an excuse to tell companies they can forget about them entirely when there are still companies making full colour manuals. Looking through my shelf I can see Halo3/ODST, Oblivion (includes a free map too), Fallout 3, Gears of war1/2 and Kameo all have thick full colour manuals.

Also how are you going to write notes for your game and not lose them when they aren't attached to the back of the manual?

Oh gawd if all of this 'Eco Packaging' keeps up we are just going to be left getting our games in these.
That has too much plastic to be truly eco-friendly.

I smell GREENWASHING! Real reason? Save money, don't have to write a manual, put tutorials in the game instead (which most games already do).

Makes perfect business sense, wish they didn't hide behind a lame-ass excuse though.

This makes no sense, none of this eco crap with video games. I want you Escapists to REALLY think hard about this. How many games have you EVER thrown out? How many Manuals have you thrown out? This isn't ecofriendly this is bullshit-tastic

"We're saving money till Digital Distribution takes over hurf durf"

I still have my first video game, if I don't want a game I sell it and what happens then? Someone buys it.
I still have my first, too! Super Bomberman on the SNES ^_^. And I don't trash anything.

So why am I in the garbage huh? I suppose your excuse is I tripped and fell in but we know the truth Tinneh.

But yeah my point is I figure most gamers don't throw out games, so this whole "eco-friendly" translates into "economy friendly" where they save money and pass the savings onto the CEOs. And laugh it up when the games break because the cases haven't been tested yet.

Why don't they go back to CD cases?? They were so nice, and they don't break discs like those goddamned Eco-Box bullshit cases. Eliminating manuals, I don't really have a problem with. Very few manuals have any good information in them. The last good one I got was for Metro 2033, and before that, probably Mechassault 2.

If you have an Eco-Box, DON'T USE IT!
Ecoboxes break discs? Since when? I've bent discs in half and they didn't snap(was trying to break said disc)
They don't snap it in half like that. The center of the case is really strong, and I believe when the disc sits in the case, the center pushes out on the disc, and eventually forms small cracks that turn into big cracks, that eventually take out chunks. My friend has had this happen to MW2 and AC2. It is very subtle and slow, but it can happen, and I've read posts on other sites about people having this problem. I don't keep my games in the boxes anymore.
Ooookay because of your post I was like "This guy is out of his mind, there's less plastic in those things and that's less force, let's prove this fool wrong by checking my cases" my fucking Darksiders has a crack in it, I've NEVER had a crack in a game disc. I'm really angry now, not because of you of course, but because of this retarded decision by game companies. This entire console generation has had so many issues it's driving me up the wall.
Ah-ha! I knew it! That sucks though. Good to hear for our cause though. I made a thread about Eco-Boxes (called Eco-Box) a while back and haven't looked at it recently. I contacted Microsoft about it and they said my friend was putting discs in wrong, which pissed him off. I just suggest getting different cases, or not using them like I do.

It COULD be a good idea, but a paper manual is always nice to have. They could just make plastic manuals or plastic cards binded that have the manual imposed on them... or maybe stick with what we have.

That does, however, eleminate the destruction/ruining of physical manuals. I wish NES/SNES games had internal manuals.

Yeah it's your friends fault, tell him to stop trying to put the disc in with a plunger like a moron! Only Microsoft could possibly know how to use a device such as a DVD case, because they're TOTALLY new to the world.

Seriously, how does one put a game wrong into a DVD case? Look let me put this into perspective, I had new PSOne games where I pulled on the disc and it bent in quite a shape I thought should snap it, but didn't. That should say something about these eco-boxes, or maybe the DVDs.

Yes, he will be tortured until he says he loves M$ before he is executed. Now that more people have had problems with it, I will dig through the threads and look for that thread, maybe someone important will see it.

Aww, you know I'd never trash you, mate. Trust me, you needn't worry. It's cool.
