What better way to fight used sales then to make people not want to buy the game new!

I think they're onto something!

Oh, Ubisoft...

I don't have a snarky comment. That news story seems like it's enough as it is.

EDIT: Well, props to them for fixing the situation. Though it would never have happened in the first place if they just didn't do the pass thing, but whatever.

That would apply if these were the PC versions of the game, but its the 360 not PC. The PC people are playing it already, pirated or not.
I might lack key knowledge in this but are you implying that 360s can't be modded to play pirated games?

I'm saying this to somewhat save face at the fact I was actually thinking of the PC version and ignoring the consoles used market fight...

Huh. That's pretty cool of Ubisoft.

Agreed. Why is it that the companies that screw up the most tend to have the best customer service? That's not always true, mind you. It's just a general trend I've noticed, between EA and Ubisoft.

Well, silly as the whole scenario is, credit where it's due on their handling of the situation. Especially the worldwide thing.

It's nice to know that someone at Ubisoft has common sense and a soul.

So on the 28th July Ubisoft declares their DRM a "Success".

It has been the direct cause of Settlers 7 being unplayable when it was released, From Dust just screwed everything up, and now Driver doesn't come with the right code to access the content you bought.

Now, I'm no dictionary, but to me, that sounds like the opposite of successful.

Well at least they're making it free like it always should have been. What the hell is wrong with publishers recently? It seems like there's no publishers to support any more. They're all being so stupid right now. Are there any good publishers left? They're all either being greedy and evil, childish and pathetic, or just blundering fools.

But don't let this screw up make you think any less of Driver San Francisco as a game. It's really brilliant. It's hugely fun and a great breath of fresh air and innovation in the racing genre. If you feel put off by the premise, don't worry about it. Just roll with it and you will have a great time. It's not really that stupid anyway, it's not like Tanner is actually given superpowers, it's all a dream. It manages to do that without feeling irrelevant too, because Tanner doesn't realise it's all a dream and the happenings in the story are actually grounded in reality. The events that happen in his dream world are actually supposed to be happening in reality at the same time. He only dreams about them because he hears about them on the radio and TV in his hospital room and enter his mind unconsciously. I guess if you also have an open mind about the possibilities of the metaphysical or the power of the unconscious mind then that helps to make the premise seem more believable. But hey, it's a video game! Why should it be believable? It's about how fun the mechanics are. And they are bloody fun.

At least they are trying to make things right in this one area.

For the most part, their business plan has lately been:

1. Draw pistol
2. Shoot foot
3. Reload
4. Continue shooting foot until it falls off
5. ?
6. Profit

I'm pretty unimpressed by this point.

I wouldn't doubt it would be possible to mod a 360. I'm just not certain if a modified Xbox 360 would even be able to go online without getting flagged or anything, much less playing a game online when no code has been activated for the account/console.
Microsoft occasionally checks if people are running a game that haven't been released yet, because console games are generally pirated weeks ahead of release, they can't detect it otherwise. This is also the source of the myth that the pc has more piracy, because that happens closer to release day, which is when publishers count them.

Well, this seems like a perfect game to pick up used just to stick it to Ubisoft... Or will that send the message that its online pass is the only thing keeping us from buying used? I don't really know which would be better. Maybe not buying it at all? Yeah, that sounds good.

List for successful defense against piracy/used games:

- create complicated system that costs lots of money to safeguard
- make lots of one-time use codes for online play
- forget to actually give anybody codes
- make registering for system free

all according to plan

Sheesh, they forgot the codes AGAIN? You'd think they learn when their entire first run of the Settlers 2 remake was without CD-keys. Seriously, whoever is responsible for making sure the damn codes are in the game really needs to get sacked. Then again, with how badly they've been screwing up, it might just happen.
