Ubisoft Reveals Rayman Legends Release Date

Rayman Legends will be jumping to the Wii U within the console's launch window.

The follow-up to Rayman Origins was originally slated to be a Wii U launch title, but in October Ubisoft crushed the hopes of early hardware adopters by delaying Rayman Legends [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/120022-Rayman-Legends-Pushed-to-2013] to the vague first quarter of 2013. It appears that Legends will indeed make it to stores during the Wii U's launch window; Ubisoft has just announced that the console exclusive will be released on February 26, 2013.

European gamers will have to wait just a little longer to experience the next adventure of the limbless hero. Rayman Legends is scheduled to be released in the UK on March 1, 2013. A demo for the game will be available on the Nintendo eShop worldwide next week on December 13.

Rayman Legends builds on Origins' co-op platforming by utilizing the Wii U's GamePad controller for asynchronous gameplay, allowing one player to use a green bug to interact with the environment to help (or hinder) the other players. Unlike the multiplatform Origins, Rayman Legends was developed exclusively for the Wii U. While it was a bit disappointing to see it pushed back into 2013, hopefully the extra time allowed the development team to create a worthy sequel to the favorably reviewed [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/9249-Rayman-Origins-Review] Rayman Origins.

I'm still not forgiving Ubisoft for taking one of the most enjoyable and memorable experiences I've had in gaming recently and making it a WiiU exclusive. That was a low blow.

I do think the delay was a smart move. Now Legends won't have to compete with Mario or ZombiU, and I can't think of any games coming out in February. And I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on this...

How is it a low blow? So what if they decided to make it a Wii U exclusive? I understand your frustration do to Origins being multi-platform, but if Ubisoft believed that Legends would be best experienced on the Wii U then that is their decision.

I will say this however, I played a demo of it with some friends at a Gamestop and we all thought it was a great game that works well on the Wii U.

It's still quite a shame that Legends will be a WiiU exclusive. I loved Origins and have it on PS3 and Vita. I would give anything to have Legends on at least PS3.

Oh well. Guess it's a good thing my sister is asking for a WiiU for Christmas.

I bet this ends up on other platforms eventually. I also bet I end up buying one of these Wii Us some time next year, preferably after at least one or two hardware revisions.

So sad that I'll never be able to play this. Origins is one of the best games I've played in recent memory.

I played the demo at GameStop and I loved it, I must say. and I don't even like the WiiU! But I do love Rayman Origins.

It sucks it will be a WiiU exclusive but I can kinda see why. I mean, anyone who's played the demo can back me up here.

European release times delayed? Wait, Isn't Rayman a European franchise made by Ubisoft in France and Belgium?

Ummmmmm. probably not.

lets look at it this way either they remove the Murphy character completely: this will receive a large amount of anger for feeling like they are just re-releasing Origins with a new character (basically the argument against most sports games), and not to mention many of the levels would have to be completely redesigned and that can be gleaned from the kiosk demo, and the various videos.

or they shift the character's controls to the main screen (removing a player), and potentially distract the other players from the platforming. maybe on the 360 (get up to 4 players on controllers, and then 1 on the Kinnect), but this has the issue that the 360 gets all counting/memory deficient when your using the Kinnect. not to mention that we still have that distraction issue, and we add in an accuracy issue too. as well as the issue of without the tablet in your hands the Kinnect makes people just look goofy (unless they finally make my dream Kinnect game, but I am keeping that quiet to hopefully make myself).

so we might see some of the levels modified to not require the 5th player, and released in another multi-platform game, but that will probably be after Ubisoft is done trying to make money off this, and we will still potentially see that anger issue from option 1

Hmm, didn't know about the Murphy character. I was hoping it would just be Rayman Origins 2. I suppose it could work on Vita or 3DS (neither of which I own). I imagine they could make it function on the PS3 with the Move possibly, but it would have to be an optional character.

Let the record show that I called it. However, I did not foresee them delaying the game a year or two to do so.
