So I have doing some research on Unbunto and linux and general because I wanted to replace the OS in my old laptop. However I want to run some games on it and I cant find any good solid info on whether linux or ubunto can run any of the games I want to play (WoW, Starcraft 2, etc..) i have heard of Wine but still haven't found a definite answer. This is also going to be a test run for a new computer I want to get.

Can anybody help out a new linux user? Thanks!

Wine and play on linux can be used to get games running on windows. Generally games tend to work with them but results do vary. To get a good idea of how well a game will run you can check the winedb which will tell you how well other users have got the games to work.

It's capable of running several games, you'll have to do a bit of research on Ubuntu forums though as you'll most certainly run into problems running them as they are usually buggy and it's not easy to tinker around with Linux if you're new. I'd recommend dual-booting Linux and Windows 7, so you can use one to play games, and another to do everything else.

What about Cedega? I have read that it works well with games if you pay the 5 bucks a month, but I haven't really check much more into it. Also Steam? works?

If you know of a good popular forum for Linux game users I would love to see it!

thanks again for all your answers?!

Steam works pretty well under wine, though it may pose some problems (believe WineDB lists that you should buy games manually through the website and not through the client), though the fact still remains that any game you play through it has to deal with its own Wine compatibility issues.

There are a few games out there with Linux specific clients (Heroes of Newerth comes to mind), but for the most part I think you'll be learning to fiddle with Wine where this site will be your best friend: http://appdb.winehq.org/

Basically speaking, if you're going to want to do a lot of gaming, stick with Windows, or at the very least make a partition on your new comp where it's installed. A lot less of a hassle, and a lot easier on the system in the end (generally you'll get less performance running a game through Wine than you would in Windows on the same comp.)

As for Cedega? No idea, but I'm a cheap ol' git so I'm not one to pay for something that I can do myself for free.

Linux isn't that great for games it,s more for people wanting a power house or for software development (in the same way Mac OS is for people that want to edit photo,s or video,s)
if you want games on it your best bet is to pirate a MS OS that,s no longer supported (like 98 or XP MS isn't producing them anymore so what do they care?) you can also install Wine or look for linux ports (which are harder to find then Mac ports)

If you're going to try and game in Ubuntu, you're going to, in some cases, do a lot of work in changing settings and roots and all that jazz.

Wine works well enough for most games depending on your rig, and the wineDB is actually very helpful and constantly being improved.
