Somehow the Shrek designer responsible for this somehow made a DRAGON look uglier than an ogre.

Ethan Thomas from Condemned 2: Bloodshot was pretty damn ugly, but then again he was also homeless so it's not like he had access to a shower, but still... Then again he wasn't exactly pretty in Condemned: Criminal Origins either.

I defenatly don't mind ugly ones, as long as it makes sence or fits into the games Stile (beauty would be hard to descripe in games like Psychonauts or Team Fortress 2).

I have to say that the grizzled kinda protagonist fits more into my "like" categorys then 80% of the Characters from Anime stile games, where everyone looks like a protagonist in "soon to be erotic Fanfic" or like a walking joke.

Unfortunatly, these have been used to death by the time, where I really stated to like the Idea of customized Characters or mad things like Eddie from Brütal Legend or Caleb from Blood. :p

I think "ugly" is too stronger word

what about female charachters? hheheh

now Chell from the first portal is NOT ugly..but she's not exactally fan service, she just looks a little "disheveled"

or Ashley williams, while not ugly was not fan service (though aparently they have changed that)

shepard is interesting..her default isnt that bad, but you kind of have to work to get her looking decent (my first ever shepard..looked like a troll)

Oh no, not Spyro... They killed him. That thing looks monstrous.

The protagonist from Condemned: Criminal Origins is pretty ugly. Just look at him:

Oh come on guys...

Geralt is like tailored to be the ultimate bad boy mary sue to quote Penny Arcade on another 'ugly' guy;

'he will probably tell girls that he got those scars riding his motorbike through volcanoes.'

Femshep takes a bit of effort to make pretty and her hair still looks greasy/made of plastic.

The sad thing is with male heroes we CAN find playable characters designed to be ugly that are still heroic. However the same can't be said for female leads. At worst a female character looks "average" and game developers will rarely risk having an ugly character take center stage.

It certainly adds contrast. and i`m just glad most shooters are in first person so you don`t have to look at their ugly mug all the time (prophet for instance)

The "ugliest" protagonist I can think of would be Pigsy from Pigsy's Perfect 10, a short bit of DLC for Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. It worked because Pigsy is a likeable kind a guy and the gameplay revolved around his technical abilities, instead of athletic leaping.

Thanks for giving me an excuse to post this.

That character isn't ugly, per se. This is just how the fans want to pretend they look: rugged and masculine with cocks all over. If you've ever stumbled upon any bara doujins, it's a lot like that (also my eyes why god why).

To be honest, I don't know when it comes to ugly protagonists. I want to say Kain and Raziel from the Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver games, but they're not really "ugly" either. The Nameless One is fairly inoffensive too.

Frank West is pretty ugly, now that I think of it. But hey, he's covered wars.

Heh...ugly men doesn't seem to be that big of a problem. Women on the other hand, and YOUNG women especially, fuhgetabboutit. At worst they'll be just bland...but never hideous/ repulsive (unless we're talking about something along the lines of the archetypical witch).

Sometimes Ugly and cool looking, go hand in hand. Look At Kain or Razel, Kratos etc.

Wait. Why is Shepard up there? He's customizable, and why is Niko up there? He's Russian. They tend to be white.
OT: Markus Fenix. It make you wonder what diet and exercise you have to go through to fashion yourself into a brick.

How does his being Russian excuse his utterly generic short brown-haired 30-something white male character design?

OT: Agent 47 from the Hitman series.
He isn't really ugly, he's just has a very average and forgettable, if sinister, face, something that I thought was rather interesting because his character design is actually brought up in-game as one of the reasons he's so good at blending into crowds during missions.
