I remember when Crackdown 2 had the *get six stars in all stats* or something like that right when the DLC came out and it wouldn't give it to me until I downloaded the patched version of the DLC again three days later. Pain in the butt, but worth it.

BTW loving these responses. You guys have some great stories!

You partially answered your own question. Achievements in multiplayer very often negatively impact the game for those who're not aiming for them but instead are trying to actually achieve something meaningful... like winning. There's also the sad fact that unless your game has achievements, it's actually blocked from appearing on certain platforms. This has several times forced developers to actually change the game design in order to accomodate achievements, which in turn is a negative impact.

There's also the sad fact that a lot of publishers/devs get lazy after adding achievements and instead of allowing the gamer to tweak and modify their game to their tastes (console commands and so on) while disabling achievements they instead remove the ability to tweak and modify entirely. This also impacts those gamers who prefer to use cheatcodes to amplify their gaming experience.

You provided some good reasons yourself, I've provided a few more and I'm willing to bet there's a hundred other negative impacts others can provide if they feel like it. Even one of these reasons is one reason too much when taking into account that achievements doesn't actually add anything to the game. All things you can do to get that achievement are things you still can do. Hell, take Deus Ex (the original) and Deus Ex: HR as an example. DX:HR provided an achievement for a non-lethal playthrough. Deus Ex didn't, and yet people went out and did it anyway because it was an actual achievement whether or not it provided you a cute little icon on some inconsequential profile somewhere.

Basically, achievements have killed the actual achievements you could aim for in games.
Again, I fault developers for every reason you list and those I list myself; it's their improper use of the achievement/trophy system that is the problem, not the achievement system itself. Achievements, when implemented properly and appropriatley, offer another level to a game and can be a lot of fun to pursue, often identifying challenges one might not see on their own. Take "One Free Shot" from The Orange Box; I'd have never thought to try playing Half-Life Episode 2 without guns, but it was a lot of fun doing it! The "cute little icons" are badges of accomplishments and progress that, at least in my case, offer healthy competition between friends and proof that I've actually have done something significant. And I doubt implementing achievements has truly every forced a developer to change the design of their game, c'mon. Achievements can be tied to anything in a game and used how the devs see fit. No one is FORCING them to be used a certain way; look at Avatar, the most famous 1000 GS on the 360, completely attainable in the first few minutes! If a major developer truly wanted to shirk the achievement system they could simply tie their minimum 1000 GS to story progression: "Complete the first mission, complete the second mission, etc" until they've exhausted the full minimum 1000 without ever "affecting" your gaming experience. And there are LOTS of games that do just this...

To say achievements have somehow fundamentally adversely affected gaming is too broad a stroke and unfair to the system. Achievements haven't "killed the actual achievements you could aim for in games." How does an achievement stating you beat CoD4 on Veteran kill the experience of playing CoD4 on Veteran? And if anyone is upset that tweaking a game disables achievements, then I'd offer they can't have it both ways; they're ACHIEVEMENTS, which means you should have to do something to earn them. Either you play the game as it was intended and work to earn achievements, or you change the game with mods and cheat codes to play it as you see fit without unduely earning achievement; any other way WOULD make the achievement/trophy systems meaningless and there are STILL people who've found ways to do this with hacks and exploits. In my experience, and correct me if I'm wrong, the only "tweaks" I know of that disable achievements are those that change the core game, ie: difficulty, cheats, exploits, etc, not the way the user interfaces with it.

Hahahaha!! I'd pay for that game!

But I actually kinda enjoyed the Little Rocket Man cheevo. About half-way through, it became more a matter of principle than me seeking the achievement. No matter how bad or frustrating it got, I'd come too far; I was NOT leaving that little bastard behind; he was getting on that rocket come hell or high water...

To the OP, the one in Driver:SF. The cones count as hits, It was the last trophy I needed for platinum, so I took a run and knocked out all the cones first, then did it again without hitting anything and staying above 20 or whatever and it pinged.

I failed at getting one of the Kombo Khallenge trohies in MKvsDC. Fuck Dial-a-Combo, I'm so happy MK is fixed.

"Medical Breakthrough" and "Tam O'Shatter" in TF2. For the Medic and Demoman, respectively. You have one Ubercharge (ten seconds) to destroy five buildings -- that's at the very least two Engineers, more likely three Engineers' worth of buildings. All the buildings have to be in a fast reachable radius to be destroyed in that small time frame, most of the time Engineers aren't going to sit down and let their buildings be destroyed that quickly, the other team is still interfering, it's possible someone else on your team could steal a building kill during the Uber push, plus the fucking Sentry knockback can fuck up everything.

The only way I can see this working is to get a Kritzreig Uber to give the Demo critical stickybombs, and quickly kill the Engineers with the increased damage. But a Kritz Uber doesn't give you invulnerability, and when you're possibly facing two Sentries at once to get that achievement, you're going to fucking need the invulnerability.

in Burnout Paradise, I have easily smashed most of the boards, did the super jumps, ect, but it has never given me the achievements for certain numbers of them. I don't really care though, it was an awesome game.

I thought that might be the problem but I'm sure I'e made it down there at least once without hitting cones. God knows I tried. Well I'll try again sometime.

I was never able to get the one in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood where you drop a weight on a guard. It just won't unlock for me...

Good luck getting the multiplayer achievements in Mercenaries 2 when the game wont even start if your console has an active internet connection.

Most games I don't do achievements unless I think it's something I can do. I think we need to bring up the rock band(s) achievement which is play all the songs in a row.... without pausing. I have a friend who has achieved this on all three games (he has really severe OCD) by switching off with a group of 4 people.

Well, the TF2 Pyro achievement Pyromancer (1,000,000 damage in fire) hasn't even begun counting all the 6 hours 17 minutes I've put into him-so it's basically bugged for me.

I wish Valve would make that game. I took me two or three tries to get that achievement. The first time I lost him after you run into the giant maggot thing are being chased by the chopper and have to turn and was very sad. The achievements that I think are impossible in that game are Get Some Grub(I always come out of there having killed all but two or three of those things) and Neighborhood Watch. Other achievements that are impossible to get are pretty much every non-story related achievement in Chromehounds. I will forever be disappointed in SEGA for shutting down the servers on that game.

I can only remember two that I didn't get:
Insanity - Beat Mass Effect on the Insanity difficulty (I got the profile picture for beating it on Insanity though)
Keep Off the Sand (or whatever the hell it's called) - Don't step on the sand in that one level in Half Life 2 (I spent and over an hour on that level, being really careful to not step on the sand, and I was pissed when I didn't get my achievement)

It doesn't really matter who you put the blame on. Whether it's improper use of the achievement system or not, the negative impacts are still there. Whether it's the devs, the publishers, the players or whoever you want to blame for it who is truly responsible... it all comes down to the system having negative impacts.

If you've done something worthy of an 'achievement', does it really matter whether or not you get a cute little icon to go with it? You know you've done it and why should it matter two tugs of a... well... who else knows about it? E-peen measurement is bad, hmkay? Besides, you counter yourself with the next bit about how 'a lot of games just puts the achievements there for beating the levels' and so on. In doing so making them practically worthless once more.

And I'm not even remotely upset that 'tweaking disables achievements'. I'm in fact a proponent of this, since that allows me to kill off the achievement system by tweaking something that doesn't really affect the game's difficulty. What I'm annoyed by is that games being practically forced to have achievements equally force a lot of devs to completely remove the option for tweaking. Games are getting consoles disabled and complete removal of cheat codes and so on because it's too costly to start adding features like "If console is used, disable achievements on this savegame" and so on, especially when you get to more complex games. This has happened a lot, sadly. Killing off something integral to PC gaming just because people hanker for worthless icons.

This also adds risk to everything by forcing people who need to tweak a game to run well on their systems to download trainers and config mods from third parties that can't truly be trusted. Take Dead Island as an example. Complete lack of tweaking options to the point where it's practically an unplayable game on a lot of systems. (Don't blame the hardware, I myself ran it on an Alienware m17x r3) To play the game I had to download a third party application to tweak the settings. None of it changed the difficulty or anything, but it was completely locked out by the devs. This happens a LOT in games to prevent achievements being cheatable.

I'm not saying achievements have absolutely nothing but negative impacts, but nor do they have any real positive impacts. Beyond e-peen measurement they provide nothing that the gamers don't aim for anyway once they try to add some challenge to themselves. On the other side, they have a lot of negative impacts. Multiplayer and singleplayer.
I see where you're coming from, but I think you're taking a bit of an extreme perspective. The abuses by users, precautions taken and limitations imposed upon individual gaming experiences are predominantely the exceptions and not the rules within the achievement system. Would you fault cars because thousands of people die in car accidents every year, or is the benefit and convenience of billions of perfectly safe, non-pedestrian commutes worth the "risk?" Many developers have seemlessly integrated the achievement system into their games adding/quantifying a level of depth previously unmeasured. To oversimplify and call it a crude measure of "endowment" is unbefitting for, by your logic, what else are ALL games if not that? You gain nothing from playing a game without achievement save for a feeling of accomplishment and a measure of pride, correct? Before achievements and now, do you not talk to friends about the things you do in your games, boast about your 'accomplishments?' Achievements are nothing more than an objectievly quantifiable representation of the same crap we gamers have been talking since the first games came out decades ago, and yes, just as I took pride in beating the tar out of friends on NES titles back in the 80s and 90s, I take pride in having a significant achievement my friends today might not. It's healthy competition, a surmounting of a challenge; it's about fun, which is what games are supposed to be about; innocent enough until like anything can be, it's perverted by abuse and misuse. Still, I think the benefits outweigh risks; hopefully the next gen can weed out some of the issues you and others have with the system because rest assured, they're not going away any time soon!

Ugh, Neighborhood Watch... two attempts and I gave up on that one. Between One Free Bullet, Little Rocket Man and the one someone else mentioned about staying off the sand, I didn't have the patience to spare!

Recently, I got annoyed by Skyrim's "Oblivion Walker" achievement when I found out that I can't get it due to the fact that I went with the "good" moral choices with 2/15 of the quests, making it impossible to get the achievement even though I have completed all the daedric quests >:|

It annoys me because Skyrim is one of the very few games where I bother to be a completionist. I was also annoyed that there's no achievement for finding all the Stones of Barenziah, yet there are those stupid ones like for "surviving" the first custscene of the game.. *eyeroll*.. it's like, who the f WON'T get it? Who the hell would buy the game and NOT get through the first objective?? Ugh.

Achievements being completely worthless to begin with, along with how they negatively impact gaming in general is pretty much the reason I have to respond to this with a shrug and a yawn.
Hey, they're not all bad. They can get you to push the games in different ways the developers couldn't sneak in the game "legitimately." Like trying to break all the monitors in Portal 2. Or they could get the player to think about the game differently, like the One Free Bullet achievement in HL2 (use only one bullet through the entire game), or the "Little Rocket Man" achievement in HL2 Episode 2 (take a garden gnome with you all the way through the game and put it in the rocket in the end). It can also get them to look for easter eggs, like the Vorticough achievement of HL2 (find the hidden singing Vortigaunt).

And it's not like they interrupt the game at all. If you don't like them, just ignore them.

Arkham City has the most Dickhead achievement I've ever encountered, without a doubt. To get it properly, the game expects you to play AC and speak to Calendar Man on specific holidays IRL, for a YEAR.
I'm looking forward to this one; it's REALLY different. It asks that you speak to Calendar Man on major holidays, so it shouldn't take a whole year seeing as some months have several holidays and other are really close together like Christmas and New Years. If nothing else, it'll be an interesting one to have! But if THIS one glitches... man, I'm going straight to my congressman.

Is it pathetic that I've set up calendar alerts on my cell phone to remind to pop AC in? Yeah, I know it is...

I've never really cared for achievements all that much, but I don't mind them being there. I just don't go out of my way to obtain them.

what's interesting is that in MW3, the "reach max weapon lvl" achievement is obtainable without actually getting the weapon to level 31.

If you have it on PS3/Xbox then D/C from the internet and change the console's internal clock, not sure if you could do the same for the PC version though

Edit: meant to be a reply...
