I just bought a PS3 to catch up with a few exclusives I wanted but could never afford the console for since my money went on a 360 and games. I bought a bundle including 4 games, included in these is uncharted 2. Now I'm wondering, would it be a good idea (ie does it add anything major or have some major story I need to be in the know about) to play the first one first? I've looked round the internet but have found nothing on this with having to be ridiculously careful not to get spoilers.

No, nothing drastic.

Nate found some treasure, did some killing, all that good stuff.

I got the story just fine without playing the first game. Lay back and enjoy the experince, It's a great one.

EDIT: I suppose the only thing that carries over from game to game is the relationship of Nathan and Elena.

I don't see many connections between the first and the second, except for characters that carry over of course. They hardly ever even mention the events of the first game.

The Uncharted games are mostly standalone stories, save of course for the romance plot. I am almost positive there aren't any direct references to the first Uncharted in Uncharted 2, but I do remember a few throwaway references to other adventures they've had that the player didn't participate in, so if you don't know about Uncharted 1, references to it would probably just blend in with these.

You don't need the first game at all... it would help you to know some characters, but you can understand them just right in uncharted 2...

So no... you don't need Uncharted 1 to understand Uncharted 2.
