Right, serious question, why is the rate of pregnancy so high with Teenagers in the UK?

Why does the UK have such a high rate? 51 out of 1000 in the highest parts of britain.

Why? It baffles me how people can have sex without a condom, becoming a dad would scare the hell out of me, why doesnt it for these people?

What do you think is the reason for such high rates in he UK, or for that matter, any country?

Sorry if it's a silly thread but i'm just curiouss
Serious question; why can't I find any of these underage tarts? :(

Because sex is awesome?

I don't know, I live in Hampshire, which has the highest rate in the UK, and I've known lots of teenage mums, although a lot get abortions. I can't think of a good reason, it's not like we don't get educated or anything, and we get free condoms and Pills. It's odd...
Hampshire FTW!
also Alchohol.
lots and lots of alcahol

Honestly?

I think it has to do with the simple fact that teenagers are going to have sex no matter what people think or say about it. It's part of growing up, and learning about life. I don't think adults should be having sex with teens, but am fairly open minded when it comes to teens having sex with each other. Heck, we make movies and write songs about it.

The thing is that adults with a somewhat more mature, but also somewhat stupid, perspective on such things, feel that the lessons they learned during that time period are something they can protect kids from. Hence a giant push to limit sexual education, censor the media, and try and create an enviroment that they feel will foster virgin teens.

In reality you wind up with a lot of teens doing all the same stuff, but without the same degree of information, or easy access to things like birth control. If it takes a massive and embarassing act for kids to get condoms or "the pill" they are going to have sex without them. You limit sex education, and even examples in the media, and you wind up with increasingly awkward situations and people acting out of ignorance.

I'm one of those guys who supports ideas like the anonymous distribution of condoms in school, and making sex education both more involved, non-judgemental, and also totally mandatory. I say totally mandatory because a lot of schools give parents the option of not having their kids attend for religious or moral reasons. Part of a seperation of church and a public education system is to distribute such information. I am not a big supporter of "the right to make my children ignorant".

At any rate, I'm guessing the UK has issues with sex education even if it doesn't think it does, and doesn't engage in the distribution of condoms in high schools (among other things). The reaction to news like this is "OMG, we must counter this by somehow making our teenagers even more ignorant about sex" when you simply can't surpress human nature.

I live in Texas where 63% of all teenage girls will have a kid before they get their learner's permit and I manage to escape my teen years without a kid but my twin sister didn't so I got to see all the ugliness that came with becoming an uncle at the ripe old age of 17. I can tell you exactly why teens are getting pregnant in one single statement. Teenagers think they know better than everybody. Despite everyone around them living longer and experiencing more than them, they go about their teenage years in a rebellious phase and a "that will never happen to me" attitude. I don't think most of these kids are trying to get pregnant but think that they are special and it won't happen to them.

I don't know about the UK, I'm from the US, however, as different as these places are, I think that in a lot of ways the 'Zeitgeist' is similar. If the teenage pregnancy rate is high, and I can't say for certain that it is, it is because teenagers are having sex. This may seem like a smart ass answer, but the fact of the matter is, there's no other answer that really needs to be given. Even with contraceptives, pregnancies happen, and that's assuming it's used in the heat of the moment. I find it interesting that people who want sexual liberation are some of the first to complain about the fact that there are consequences to it.

this scared me when i heard it but, according to what i heard on the radio (providing this is accurate of course), children can hit puberty from as early as 7 years old now. Thats quite alarming and the guy on the radio didnt bother to give any scientific information as to why that is, so i do doubt the legitimacy of it somewhat, but it does explain quite a few things.
If kids are maturing earlier, then they will feel urges to sleep with each other at younger ages.

Bah this world is messed up

Why are underage girls getting pregnant? They are having sex, plain and simple. And at really young ages too apparently. What do you expect when the average teenager is having sex as young as 14 and 15? That these kids would know everything there is to about sex and that they would always make good decisions? BAH! The are still practically kids, they don't (for the most part) think in terms of the long run.

I recon it is because the teach sex education too early.
If you don't know it then you are less likly to think humm lets try this.
Its like some schools teaching kids not to commit sewerside...by simply saying it it triggers ideas, especilly in those who dont understand it.

I'll just speak for myself. I got pregnant at 16, had my daughter at 17. We used contraception, BOTH of us did and we still got pregnant. So you probably shouldn't assume that just because lots of teenagers get pregnant that they're not using anything.

Don't get me wrong, I'm well aware of our "Jeremy Kyle" community of teenagers who are too dumb to use anything and don't realise the consequences. As for them, I'd probably say they're the idiots who think "Ahh it'll never happen to me."

Simple (99%) solution to the problem, all teenage girls get the implant at 13. Job done.
That seems to be quite popular now. I've seen posters for it a bus stations and things. What I want to know is why I can't get implanted with some cool chemical as well. Like whatever Captain America had.
Question! I'm sorry, but what is this implant you both speak about? Can anyone bring me up to date on this?

OT: I guess stupidity/ignorance has to take the blame for this one? As I don't live in the UK I dunno 'bout how the sex-education is over there, and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I remember that my class had only the negative aspects of sex and STD's covered, along with the stuff like condoms, p-pills, spirals and all that. They wanted us to not want to have sex as a result of sex-ed, but if we were still dumb enough to not be "scared off" (I think that was their plan anyway) then at least we'd do it safely.

(also, my dumb humour was satisfied for today by seeing thenumberthirteen quoting number2301. It's like we're moving into some new sort of society where we got numbers, not names or something XD)
Sorry all but I've completely lost track of the thread but just wanted to answer this question, the implant is a version of the pill which is implanted under the skin which lasts 2-3 years. Simple.

That's my explanation.

OT: I live in Hampshire, but I must be in a good area because I haven't heard of any pregnancies around here.

It's not because people in the UK have sex without condoms, it's because condoms don't always work, it's like a 97% chance of working. That's how much sex people here have. Oh, yeah, it is alcohol as well. And underage sex. We have a 12 year old father somewhere. Damn...

Responsibility seems to be a dirty word nowadays. It's all about rights instead, and some people genuinely think it's their right to procreate.

As for the teen pregnancies, it's probably a combination the feckless parents dodging their responsibilities, the moronic government initiatives making it financially viable to spawn more overlords children (made even worse with rising unemployment and little in the way of unskilled labour) and possible changes in our society (rights over responsibilities again).

Edit: When you think about it, it's not a terribly stupid thing to do (have kids, live off taxed monies as pets of the government). At the very least they can end up with a home and an income without much work at all, which is pretty much what humanity has been working towards ever since civilisations and economies existed.
