Dread Pirate Roberts has allegedly been unmasked as Ross William Ulbricht.

Really, how long did they think it was going to last?

Apparently he ignored his own advice and regularly performed unencrypted maintenance.

Jesus, and here I always had a doubt in my mind that the Silk Road was real, but it's not like I was going to go looking for verification.

Use of high-tech tools for criminal purposes is one thing, but it's only a matter of time before some of those guys start learning real tradecraft, at which time things would probably escalate in a surprising fashion.

Not to stray too far from the topic, but here I thought you were talking about the online MMO version instead.

FreedomHost down, and one by one the dominoes fall... didn't help that the guy made several stupid mistakes, either.

Seriously. That's what TOR is all about, complete end to end anonymity, and it's not even the only network of its kind. They've shut down one website, but it's naive to think it'll do much in the grand scheme of things. Then again, you could say the same thing about the war on drugs in general.

It's interesting,

I had read awhile back that researchers were looking into finding who makes purchases with bitcoins and reading something to the affect that the anonymity of bitcoin was greatly exaggerated.

No more funny pranks to krebs i guess http://krebsonsecurity.com/2013/07/mail-from-the-velvet-cybercrime-underground/

I was expecting the owner to be competent at Tor, but he got caught because he gave out his goddamn gmail address...not exactly Walter White.

I'm more concerned that LEA are going after sites on Tor more often, whilst some of the hidden sites are illegal and need to go (especially all the child porn), this means techniques to break anonymity are going to be developed. In the hands of the wrong government this could be used to crush dissent and freedom of speech online.

No matter how this turns out Bitcoins are still the dumbest thing I've ever heard of.

I initially thought the FBI had found a way to break Tor, which I thought was nearly impossible given how Tor was made. But then again, the integrity of Tor has been questioned ever since the Javascript exploit they used a few months ago, which lead to the eviction of Tormail.

But this is not yet those news. Ulbricht, despite being the creator and head admin of one of the most illegal sites on the Internet, conveniently created a trail that traced him to Silk Road.

One Bitcoin is currently worth $109.40 USD. I can't argue with that.
