I totally agree with There Will Be Blood. I watched it for a college report and was blown away by how good it was. At least two scenes blew me away on how effective the cinematography was.

I've learned that people who don't like Equilibrium: REALLY don't like Equilibrium.
I didn't like Equilibrium much but I wouldn't say I hate it either. It was okay, a reasonably entertaining B-movie, but I wouldn't put it up there as a classic film for the following reasons:

* The gun kata look cool but are stupid, I mean, you could just step backward...
* For a society that bans emotion the protagonists are awfully emotional about enforcing it
* The ideological transformation of the lead character isn't convincingly portrayed or explained

On the plus side, it definitely does look cool, visually it's to die for. It's kind of like the Crysis of movies - exceedingly pretty, but fairly empty and nonsensical if you think about it too much. It definitely doesn't have the consistent logic and clever scripting that made The (FIRST) Matrix such a good film. It's still something that people should check out though, just for the pretties alone.

Yeah, I don't like Equilibrium. Not REALLY don't like it, I think it was just a mediocre and silly action movie with serious background problems. But that's not what this thread is about.

"Broken Lizard's Club Dread" is one of my favorite comedies. Hilarious parody of a slasher flick. But very few people I know like it, and when I loan people my copy they give me funny looks when they hand it back.

"Dark City" is one of my favorite sci-fi flicks. No one I know who has seen it hasn't loved it, but it is surprising how few people have actually seen it. For first timers, I recommend the theatrical version over the recent director's cut.

"Moon" is a 2009 independent film that is awesome. Very old-school science fiction story that they just don't make enough of nowadays.

"The Girl Who Leapt Through Time", the 2006 animated version, is an amazing anime movie based on a classic and oft-remade Japanese novel. Wasn't released in theaters in my area, so very few people I know have seen it.

thats the point though. Totalitarian governments are inevitably hypocritical.

I'll concede the other points(though I rly wish I was more awake to talk about point 3)

great thread btw, keep it up guys.

The flight of dragons.

One of the earliest animated films I ever saw. Great animations, Great music. Interesting story. An epic fantasy adventure on parr with Lord of the Rings in my opinion. Plus, JAMES EARL JONES AS THE VILLAIN. Seriously, how can you go wrong with that?

The one with Daniel Day Lewis, which he won an academy award for best actor? I think it was even nominated for best film. Then again most people don't watch every nominated film.

OT: A Knight's Tale, just a great movie. I'm not sure if everyone else agrees though.

Starship Troopers, best movie ever. Shame about the sequels.
That is the only movie I have seen where I completely hate and entirely love it at the same time.

Probably because anything other than giant bugs being shot up in that movie made me cringe, while when the bugs were being shot up I was more estatic than the Double Rainbow guy on drugs.

Well, more drugs anyway.

Six string samurai.

No everyone's cup of tea but Buddy Holly travelling through a fallout style wasteland trying to get to Vegas to become the king is my type of movie.

The realization that "holy crap, Jim Carrey can REALLY act" when seeing The Truman Show and Man on the Moon (the latter being my favorite film of the 1990s) makes me think that if he hadn't gotten himself stereotyped as a screwball, maybe those films would've been taken more seriously. As it stands, they're underrated.

*Prepares for incoming outrage.*

I'm going to go all mainstream here (sorry) and say Tropic Thunder.
I know the general majority of people liked it, but I thought it was one of the funniest, if not funniest movies I'd ever seen.
It was well-received by most, but I highly doubt it will be regarded as a classic in a couple of decades time.
That saddens me...

It has an organic computer to play virtual reality games, Willem Defoe actually gets upstaged by a mentalist Frenchman in the film, there's a bone gun that fires teeth to get through metal detectors (thats made from mutant lizards) and the film has 3 endings in quick succession.

It was upstaged by The Matrix on its release.

An awesome movie, brilliantly done, too.

My votes go for these two:

The only foreign movies I've seen recently that are on-par with american cinema quality. The plot is brilliant, and there's a rather wicked plot twist between the two as well.

There Will be Blood had excellent ratings from critics (many putting it on their Top 10 Films of 2007), recieved two academy awards and was said by some to be the second best film of the decade. How are you reaching the conclusion that it is underrated?

Also, anyone looking for some underrated classics to watch may want to take a look at this:
