A lot of people I know said that Bioshock 2's multiplayer was shit but I actually thought it was quite good. The levels were all well designed and the traps scattered around them made things interesting, not to mention the plasmids and the interactive apartment in Rapture. It all felt very old school to me. Of course it had its problems, like some really clunky controls and shifty aiming. But I enjoyed it all the same. It's too bad Bioshock: Infinite won't have any multiplayer. Playing deathmatches on those zip line things in the game would be awesome beyond belief.

I understand what you mean, but personally I'm happy that they're investing all of their resources into making another amazing single player experience. Singleplayer where the Bioshock series shines and if you want multiplayer shooting you can look to basically every shooter being made nowadays.

Let me just put it this way: in Bioshock 2 Multiplayer, whether you will survive the next 5 seconds is in the statistics of the player around the next corner. The only way to build statistics is to grind--by losing. I saw--in the time I played--no way to tactically improve any situation. The only difference tactics can make is the Big Daddy suit--which is of course random--so the party with more territory is going to win it anyway.
The best competitive multiplayer allows tactical decisions to matter, has a variety of weapons, and flows. My personal vote is Unreal Tournament--the original--but Q3A was also good.

Ahh, yes! Q3A! I remember playing that on my Dreamcast with my brothers. That was tons of fun. We had UT as well. I tried the new UT on OnLive, I don't like it much.

As far as underrated multiplayer goes, Metroid Prime 2's multiplayer was actually kind of fun. Sure, it was wierd, and in some senses jarring, but I remember going over to my friend's house just to play it.

Chronicles of Riddick Assault on Dark Athena - Pitch Black is one of the funnest multiplayer modes I've ever played. Too bad it never really had a strong community.

I got both Battlefield 3 and Uncharted 3 this November and I honestly prefer the Uc3 multiplayer. In bf3 I've reached level 9 online and haven't touched the campaign, in uc3, I've beaten the single-player 2 times (once on crushing), and reached level 60 online. The new loadout system, the medal kickbacks, and a stealth kill system that actually works this time around. It's a solid online shooter, even if the maps aren't quite as good as the uc2 maps.

I'm going for the obligatory TimeSplitters, I mean it was such a blast that even though I never owned any of them (just because I've never seen one on sale), I still always had one around just in case one of my friends would pop in, it was just so much fun, I must have spent hundreds of dollars on having that thing rented all the time.

C&C Renegade. Maps where generally pretty balanced, had a number of ways to win. The shooting mechanics weren't terrible, and you generally needed work together in order to get anywhere.

Meanwhile, I think FEAR 3's Fuckin' Run multiplayer mode was great. Yes, that was the name, and yes, it was a very apt one. Essentially, there was a very linear level laid out in front of you and a bunch of bad guys in it. You and up to three other people had to fight your way through those bad guys while a large wall of ominous smoke came to swallow you up and kill you and your buddies. It was one of the most tense things I've ever played, and I imagine that if it were fleshed out a good bit more and placed in the hands of a better team - like Bungie or Valve - it would be something really special.
This. Love Fucking Run. Too bad the online is a ghost town right now.

Warhawk. I can understand why people were turned off from it by it's rather steep learning curve, (Especially by console shooter standards) but I think it's a serious contender for the best online shooter on the PS3. At least until Starhawk comes out ;). It's a shame that the Warhawk community is nearly dead though.

Seconded.

FEAR 3... sorry, F3AR actually had pretty good multiplayer in general. Makes one wonder why they didn't just make a multiplayer shooter instead of a lame and poorly executed attempt and survival horror.

It's actually an MMORPG, but I think Final Fantasy XI deserves more credit than it gets (which more often than not is absolutely none). The stories and characters are simply incredible. Sure it's a grind and a half, but so are all MMOs and Square has drastically improved that over the years. The only reason I don't play now is I don't have the time to do an MMO anymore and by now my character information has been erased.

Monday Night Combat, a lot of people dismissed it as a TF2 clone but I thought it was really good and after playing TF2, I can say that the two games are very different besides using a class-based system and having similar graphical styles. It just showed that a simple-class-based system+a DoTa objective with a large amount of NPC enemies and allies on the battlefield could be fun. Of course I don't play anymore because the only people left playing on X-box are really REALLY good.

Trenched. Its a relatively new game, but it doesn't have any sort of playerbase to speak of. Which is sad, because the game is lot of fun with a group.

Also, Bioshock 2. Its poorly balanced and the netcode is crap, but its a lot of fun in its own way.

I agree, I dunno how they messed up so hard on XIV, when XI was such a blast.

Although I don't play alot of multiplayer, but 'Shattered Horizon' is definately the most underrated multiplayer game i've played (and perhaps one of the most underrated in general). The game is completely dead now, but there are bots which are suprisingly competent. It has a bit of a steep learning curve and needs a decent pc to run it, but regardless it's a game i think really should have had more people talking about it.

Also, 'Payday the heist' is perhaps not underrated or unknown (it scored pretty well with critics), but it really is the most fun i've had with a multiplayer game in a while.

Anyways, i'm keen to see what other multiplayer games people bring up as i'm trying to find more than might interest me.

Condemned Multiplayer was awesomely tense. Especially the mode where one person is the murderer.
