It's amazing where you see references sometimes.

I remember I was visiting one of my young cousins a year or so ago, and he was watching TV. Some cartoon I'd heard about, Storm Hawks. Seemed fairly crap, cheesy, by the numbers stuff. So he went through a couple of episodes of that.

Anyway, there was this episode where they're escaping the generic evil empire's massive war fleet, and to to so they go into some cloud nebula thing chock with these gruesome pirates known to raid for the fun of it.

They encounter said pirates and in their escape, they play the two sides off against each other. With the pirate fleet on their tail, they zip out the nebula and the two sides go nuts on each other while their ship escapes safely.

That whole thing, the almost mythically feared raiders, the empire fleet, the universally avoided area where said raiders hung out, and the whole climax of that episode was one massive Serenity reference, which I only realized now, a couple of months after having watched Firefly and Serenity.

Well played, shitty cartoon. Well played.

What about you, Escapists?

I think this is all there needs to be said.
I remember that.

One of the most beautiful examples of censors turning a blind eye ever after the Tom & Jerry suicide episode.

Well, sticking with Firefly, there's a Weyland Yutani symbol on the HUD of the anti-aircraft gun that Mal uses in the first episode.

The Blue Suns of Mass Effect have have an emblem that's seen in Firefly on numerous occasions.

This video has several AKIRA references that you really wouldn't think of Kanye dropping, but he's apparently a pretty big fan.

I found the Daft Punk cameo just as unexpected. Not often a hip-hop artist actually acknowledges the musician they sampled, and it's even rare they do so by giving them screen-time in their music video.

Yes, actually. There WAS one that made me scream while I was playing Swtor.

You see, I was on a mission to destroy a drug cartel that was selling spice to Empire soldiers and making life hard for our evil organization, so I took the mission and the man I was talking to went...

"The spice must blow!"

Nobody, but NOBODY, was expecting Dune to make it into Star Wars, least of all me.

That's actually two actors playing Daft Punk, from Daft Punk's Electroma, a movie they made. Still, though, it is a nice shout-out.

I think I just came across a Modern Warfare 2 reference in Far Cry 3. One of the characters mentions that the Russia job is about to bust wide open and that he was going to join Task Force 141.

Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome made numerous references to episodes of Star Trek Deep Space Nine. It helps that both series shared a writer in Michael Taylor.

The Lost Expeditions are filled with these. One of them is an abandoned Abstergo Bunker, seeming to indicate that Far Cry 3 exists in the same universe as Assassins Creed...

OT: Encountering Springheeled Jack in Oblivion was pretty sweet.
Killing him was even better...

The 'he punched a hole in the Moon for me' reference in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World from Akira.

I knew that movie would have loads of nerd culture references, but I really didn't expect this one.

I was reading The Oatmeal and there was a totally unexpected reference to Arrested Development, If you hadn't watched the show then the comic would make absolutely zero sense to you and even if you did watch the show, you could still totally miss it and be all like "dah faq"

But here it is! contains spoilers for "127 Hours"

The Kill Bill reference made me smile, even if it was quite obvious it wasn't very unexpected. Didn't find the MW2 one though.

There's an episode in MLP called "Call of Cutie.". Sounds a lot like "Call of Cthulu", don't you think?

Most amazing one I found was in the Wild Cards series. At one point a character is being chased, and while trying to figure a way out of his situation he thinks "This is the place of death" which sounded familiar to me, but I couldn't nail it down specifically. He then thinks "But the buck lived, because he came first running for his life." and I got it, and was amazed. A Kipling reference? In Wild Cards? Awesome!

Though I don't want to think about the two times characters in MLP parodied Scarlet O'Hara with the line "As Celestia is my witness I will never be ______ again!
