So got a story but if you just want the question skip to the end.

So my Great Grandfather was soldier in WWI. He some how made it back to America in one piece and started a job as a roofer. At the time he didn't have a ladle so he needed a way to scoop tar onto the roof. What he did have was a metal poll about six feet long and German helmet he brought back from the front lines. He welded the one on the other and that is why out in my Grandparent's shed we have an interesting and would be valuable piece of history rusted out and welded to a metal poll.

Discussion time: Does your family have an heirlooms that have an interesting or unique story?

I have a stopwatch that was made out of an old compass. My grandpa made it in Ireland in 1949.

My Grandfather had a room full of guns including 2 machineguns and a cannon. He never really told us how he got them but it was always interesting to me.

The only hierloom I have is a ring my cancer - stricken Grandad gave to me. I don't know what it's worth in legal tender, but I won't be selling it, HE valued it, and thats all that matters. I just hope I'll never be in a situation so desperate I'll be forced to sell it.

EDIT: Huh... a lot of Grandads here.
