I was recently looking up updated news on Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena mainly because it's one of my most anticipated games for 2009. I have to say that the graphics look simply amazing and I will be getting this (I missed out on getting Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butchers Bay, so bonus for me :D)

But what really caught my eye was the multiplayer mode Pitch Black.

Its quite simple really.

There are two teams, seven mercs and Riddick. The mercs start in a brightly lit room and can choose from a selection of firearms, they then drop down into a completely pitch black series of rooms and corridors (hence the name of the mode) and they can only see using their flashlights. Riddick is armed with Ulaks (The curved blades from the movie) and can see in the dark, whoever kills Riddick becomes him. Getting hit from Riddick is pretty much a one hit kill so everything becomes pretty tense.

I love these unique multiplayer modes, another example would be Survivor from Aliens vs Predator 2.

It really shows the developers have put some effort into a game when they include thinigs over than Team Deathmatch and CTF and the likes.

So discuss, what is your favourite unique multiplayer mode and/or if you could make a unique multiplayer mode for any game what would it be?

That sounds kind of like Dark Sector's two multiplayer modes.

1. One player is the main character and the rest are average grunts, who have to work together and kill the lone wolf. The main character is pretty powerful, so teamwork is an absolute must. The player who kills the main character will respawn as him.

2. This one is basically like VIP...each team has a main character and the object is to kill the other team's VIP.

There's actually a HL2 mod that sounds really similar to this called The Hidden. It's the same basic concept, only its an invisible, psychotic murderer versus a team corporate mercenaries. It was great fun, you might want to get it if you can't wait for Riddick.

As for my favorite unique multiplayer mode, I'd either say payload for TF2 (moving a bomb cart along rails to destroy the enemy base) or Virus from Timesplitters (one person begins ignited with green flames, and must ignite all other players by touching them. Last person uninfected wins).

personally i think left 4 dead's multiplayer is unique. i mean zombies have been dont before but never like that.

submission from gears 2. there is basically vip on the map. locust and cog fight to try and drag the vip to the extraction zone. but with a catch the vip dosent want your help and is armed with a shotgun that will blow you away if your not careful.

Left 4 Dead has some cool multiplayer. The campaign mode is completely focused on forcing you to use teamwork, which is really original in itself. Then, there's the versus mode, playing as the infected, then as humans again against real people.

Virus mode *wipes tear from eye* the best mode from Timesplitters. This is why I want TS4 to be released :D

Kane and Lynch's... I can't remember the name, but it has a lot of backstabbing AND teamwork in the same mode. I love it.
Crysis's Power Struggle. The only part about the game that I actually liked.
Left 4 Dead, of course.

the darkness

if you played shapeshifters you could change between an evil little demon to a regular person whenever you wanted, the little demon only has claws except it's fast, can jump high and far, and can walk on walls and ceilings, the human can use armor, guns and, has more health

Far Cry Instincts had my favorite mp mode ever. Predator. One player has all the feral powers and must kill every one else. The other players try to repair a "sonic emitter" to end the round. The game can be balanced perfectly (you can ajust the starting health and armor of the predator) and if you play on a dark map, it can be one of the most frightening things I have ever played. As the predator gets closer you controller starts to go "thump-thump" faster and faster.
I've had so much fun with that game.

Simmons: This next game is called blindfold. When you get shot with a green weapon, like the plasma pistol, you have to play with your controller upside-down untill you get shot by a blue weapon, like the plasma rifle. But, if you are shot by a blue weapon in a bubble sheild, which is yellow, yellow and blue make green. So...

Sarge: Why is it called "blindfold"?

Simmons: That's because when you get shot by a needler, you have to close one eye.
Also "surf" from Counter Strike. You play by sliding along angles surfaces at high speeds in a shooter.

Well, that description makes me think of the first Unreal which had the "darkmatch"... It was basically just deathmatch with lots of darkness and flashlights. Unfortunately nobody ever played it, so I have no idea how well it worked.

super monkey ball 2 - hangliding balls : Roll down a ramp, fly off and open the ball. The goal is to close your ball and drop onto a target of various points.

One of the funnest 4 player multiplayer there is imo. It also makes for a great drinking game if you are decent at math.

Though disgustingly flawed I Loved the Fragile Alliance game mode in Kane and Lynch: Dead Men, you truly can never trust those around you. Also Gold Rush from Battlefield: Bad Company is loads of fun. It is brought down, however, by EA's crappy servers which are impossible to connect to 87% of the time.

Crime scene mode in comdemned 2. The influenced (hobo) team had to hide two crates with severed heads in them, and the SWAT team had to locate the crates and scan them to win. The Hobo team won by killing all the SWAT guys. The hobos could only use melee weapons, and the SWAT guys had guns with limited ammo....I had soooo much fun playing that mode before everyone stopped playing that game.

Myself and my mate had an idea once for a multiplayer mode in Devil May Cry. Basically it's the two of you in a circular room, and enemies keep constantly spawning in until you die. (Kind of like blood palace but with no time limit).

There could be a couple of modes to it, to try and kill more/survive longer than your friend, or to work together to try and last as long as possible. I don't know how the games mechanics would go with two people fighting enemies, but I think it could be work and would be great fun.

I always liked the challenge system from Perfect Dark, that was always great fun on four player, and difficult as well in some of the later challenges.

Aliens vs Predator 2 was pretty freakin' epic... I loved the spawn mode, where you had to start out as a face-hugger if you were playing as the aliens.

The Splinter Cell games also had a very unique multiplayer mode, where one team played as spies from third person and were trying to hack a number of terminals, while the mercs tried to stop them and played in first person...

XIII had a multiplayer mode with a grim reaper running around while singing a song. All players are equiped with double-barreled shotguns and if you hit the reaper you score points, but the more the reaper is hit the smaller he gets and the more points you get for hitting him. Getting hit by the grim reaper is a one-hit kill.
