For campus: Stirling, Exeter.

Look into the universities' reputations, but also into their course requirements and examination formats. Some weigh coursework heavily. Others base your entire success or failure on the ability to choose, write and illustrate two 2,500-word essays without references in a total of three hours. Some may have several exams rather than just one.

One warning: Warwich University isn't in Warwick. It's south-west of Coventry, and south-west Coventry is the shitty part of town, in spades. Nice enough university, lousy area to live off-campus after year one.

Don't go spending all your money joining every club in the place at freshers' fair. You won't get to take part in all of them. Pick three or four at most.

Go to all your lectures, lectures from other modules too and as many of other people's lectures as you can.

Learn to cook before you go.

Don't be afraid to abandon a drink unfinished and get a fresh one, and don't minesweep girls' unfinished drinks. You never know what's been slipped into them.
Good advice, thank you. The part about Coventry sticks out to me, because right now Coventry is competing with Lincoln for the top of my list. Is it just that part of Coventry which is crap or is Coventry itself pretty mediocre?

Im studying engineering at Cambridge at the moment and I have to say its very hard work but the university itself is great fun and I really like the college system as it gives you a smaller group of students and a building to "belong" to.

Great idea vanguard. I want to do History next year.
Same here! At Aberystwyth :D And you're going to Sonisphere (if I remember rightly). This is getting creepy... Well, kinda, but not really...

But anyway, I don't have any experiences of uni, 'cos I've not gone there yet, but I am totally looking forward to it! If what I've been told is true, its one of the best times of your life :D

What was the social/ night life thing like? (if there is any, what with it being a small-ish town) Are there places to be, and places to avoid as far as clubs/ pubs go? Waht did you study there by the way?
I am indeed wanting to do History at Aber, and am going to Sonisphere.....I shall see you around XD

Biology at Chester
Best years of my life (mainly because school and work were so shit)
That's good to hear, because Chester is on my list of considerations.
And I can relate, because quite frankly sixth form at my school is often a joke and I live in Kidderminster so pretty much any escape will be a nice one.
YOU LIVE IN KIDDERMINSTER?

Ha! I'm from Bewdley, didn't know there were many escapists nearby.

I'm aiming to get into Lampeter Uni this September (results pending..) and I had a 3 day taster course with the Archaeology department last week. The University itself is beautiful, and the town is small and situated in a great part of Wales, not too far from the coast. The place is small and friendly and everyone who works and has learned there says that usually by the end of the year you know everyone there pretty well.

Accommodation was simple but nice, the quiet halls where I booked a place are fantastic. Great library too :D

Teaching on the taster days was awesome, all the lecturers are just big kids really. Watch out for Tuesdays though, that's Karaoke night at the campus bar, bring ear plugs. ;)

Good luck with getting into your uni of choice!

i know 3 guys who go to sunderland uni.... they all hate it lol
Well it's in sunderland so what do you expect.

I was unoriginal and went to Newcastle but it was great and I'd recommend it to anyone. Sadly since we invented charvers there are lots of them, happily they will just shout abuse at you rather than mug and stab you like other parts of the country.

I'm currently studying mathematics at kings college london. An absolutely brilliant place to study, and you get to be in London which is a fantastic city where you'll always have a million places to go.

OK, this is weird. I'm also from Kidderminster! Talk about creepy... Though the place was lost to any sort of people like good ol' Escapians (even if that's not the term, I shall endevour to use it!).

But back to topic: I'm currently at Liverpool University, studying Classical Studies. It's a pretty amazing place (I stumbled across it through clearing), with lots going on and a fantastic city. A wide range of courses, but can't be sure on journalism. I would recommend the place, however, 100%. Great atmosphere.

Heh! I'm going to Aberystwyth in September! Literature and creative writing, seems like a nice place.

About 3 of my friends are going there. It sounds great. I'm also shocked how many Escapists seem to be from around this area or, at least, are moving to here.

I've been feeling like that too. It DOES seem like a little odd to suddenly notice so much activity in a random bit of Wales, but s'all good.

I'm going to Glasgow Caledonia next year, and have heard a lot of good things about it :) so hopefully it will live up to it's reputation.
The saltire building is amazing - I went to paisley uni as I felt the teaching for web technologies was much stronger), but caledonian is a much nicer place.

As for OP I hope you have as much fun at uni as I did and journalism is a tough topic, but dont let it get in the way of your fun times :D

It really depends on what you want. I recommend choosing somewhere you think you'd actually like to live for three years or however long your course is. You should definitely go see all the ones you're thinking of before you decide, I put York down as more of a filler option than anything else and absolutely fell in love with the uni when I visited it.

I'm doing math and thats pretty much the same wherever you are but it might not be the same for journalism so you should make sure that the course at the university you're applying for is the one you really want to do.

If you want to avoid chavs, you might want to forget about anything in London... unless it's part of UoL [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_London], I guess, their standards should probably keep out all but the best students.

Newcastle and Cardiff seemed really nice when I visited, and I've heard from friends that Portsmouth and Chester are great.

So, to any and all of you who have studied, or are studying, at a university in the UK I ask you: can you recommend any good unis? Or warn me of any bad ones? The towns or cities they're situated in are also a massive factor. Little or no chavs if possible!
What type of uni do you want? a rural one? one with a good night life? Also an idea of the grades your looking at would help.
Also about the chavs: If they are chavs attending university, don't expect them to be similar to the garden variety chavs you see drinking cider in the park. they are atleast making an effort, they cant be that bad.

Im going De Montford Leicester to study psychology this year, starting in september, and im really looking forward to it.

Indeed =D I really hope the weather is nice this weekend for it, I haven't yet dared to look at the forecast, for fear of what I might discover :S

Slightly more on topic: Have you been on any visit days yet? I went to the history visit day in September it think it was, and all the history staff seemed pretty cool. I was going to go to University of Manchester (not ManMet) but Aber actually scores higher for History in the Times Good University Guide, which surprised me, and it seems to have a nicer atmosphere :D

I've had a look at the weather, but theres not much you can tell from it, I think it'll just be luck.

I've been to the open day last month (I believe I'm a year younger than you), and I did think it had a friendly atmosphere. The buildings were a bit grey, but it was nice enough, and the town I know quite well, which is good. The gaming shop there is amazing aswell.

N'Castle here, Economics degree, starting this year. Good nightlife, prestigous, cheap enough to live in, and while it's a bit rough, I lived in South Africa for three years previous, so I doubt there's anything in England that can hurt me.

Howdy y'all. I'm doing a bit of late night research into universities, for I'm hoping to study Journalism at university in the next couple of years. It's only just occured to me I have a whole community to call upon for their experiences.

So, to any and all of you who have studied, or are studying, at a university in the UK I ask you: can you recommend any good unis? Or warn me of any bad ones? The towns or cities they're situated in are also a massive factor. Little or no chavs if possible!
Get The Times and Guardian good uni guides. Apply to the ones highest up the list that will accept you with the grades you expect to get. Thats the best way to do it. Even if you have your heart set on journalism you would be better off going to a Russel Group Uni and doing something else (English, History etc, even economics), while picking up all the time you can at the uni paper then doing Journalism at some crappy ex-polytechnic.
