I've got a weird problem with games regarding my internet.

I seem to have no problem playing an MMO, but if I try to play Minecraft I get colossal lag.

Does anyone have an explanation for this, or a solution?

I really doubt it's anything to do with my computer, but maybe there's some way to save space that stops this happening.

EDIT: Same results in singleplayer. So obviously my computer -_-

Your problem is that Minecraft runs Java, which is massively inefficient if my comp sci friends are to be trusted.

Java is a pain in the ass. Minecraft is more of a system hog than most MMOs today.

So...anyway to make it more efficient? It worked fine on my 7 year old computer, but my new one with much better specs is having trouble.

You can allocate more memory for Java to use which can help.

Beyond that its hard to tell, my system which well exceeds the recommended specs for most modern games will still sometimes chug in Minecraft.

You could try Optifine

Making sure you're using the 64 bit version of java helps a lot. However, even with this, you still might be running really slow because java is super inefficient.

Minecraft is a performance black hole; lag is inevitable.
Either install a few mods to fix it, or don't play Minecraft on a uni computer.

Optifine and reallocating memory to Java will fix most performance issues.

Blame Java for everything. EVERYTHING. I have a comp sci friend who blames Java when his toast burns, that's how not-awesome it is.

Open task manager and measure your computer's performance over time. Knowing minecraft, memory usage will probably gradually go up over time, and there's not much we can do about that apart from pleading with Notch to use some of his money to get a few Quality Control lessons, or installing more RAM.
