University results: how did everybody do?

Grats always good to get a degree knocked out.

Mine was a BA in poli sci and economics. College was a joke for me and I worked full time so I only got a 3.41 gpa which nowdays if your a breathing body 3.0+ is a freebie in pretty much any non hard science degree path.

I honestly wish I never would have gone the return on investment is terrible, and the jobs that pay nowdays are prety much non 4 year degree jobs. I wish I had the balls to do what some of my acquaintances did and just go into business for myself. One guy mows lawns and pulls in a dollar a minute(wont mow someones house for less) the other just started doing general house repairs bought himself a beat up pick up truck last year and does odd jobs for people must be doing okay cause he just paid cash for his wifes 6 series convertable and bought himself a 5500 sq ft house. /envy

I hardly think that's a fair assessment. Sure, some students have it easy but many don't. My summer jobs prove much less stressful than anything I do in term time, mostly because when I'm off work I'm actually off. The courses I've done during term time don't give me that luxury. When I haven't been working my ass off to make sure I don't starve (since my loan didn't even manage to cover accommodation fees/rent, let alone anything else), I've been studying or in the labs. For this summer project I was given a key with the total expectation that I was going to be there well after they had all left to go home every day.

People who make statements like this make me wonder what sort of easy-ass degree they obtained.

On the other hand, I graduated from Tech School for Electronic Engineering Technologies with a B average, so I'm officially a completely normal electronics techie.

So I got my results and I managed to get my degree. It was really close for a while, and I came close to droping out when I found a problem with my dissertation but I managed to pull it off.

So the purpose of this thred is twofold. 1. I am a nosey bastard and I want to know how other people did and 2. this thred gives me the chance to thank eveyone from the Escapist who helped me out by completing my questionaire.

I actually work at a University so I know the hard work, and hard times students go through.

Students? Hard times?

I could get really mad at that attitude, but as you say, you're a downer like that.
But let me just say on Friday in between pandering to over paid academics and shifting more paperwork that I would have ever thought possible I had three students considering quitting and two who were considering suicide.
Just because the media portray students as slacker who are only at Uni to get drunk doesn't mean that they all fall into such generalizations.

Hope to get the latter, I really like working in an academic environment, but I gotta pay for internet somehow so if I get a job I'll go for it.

When you say you graduated was that your undergrad or a Masters?
I only as as most admissions for PhD study will expect you to have both an undergrad and a masters before considering PhD study, And they like an applicant to have gone on and used what they have learnt in the real world before moving on to a PhD.

well I've only finished my 1st year of a BA in Performing Arts (don't quite have the attention span for anything hard or useful I'm afraid) and on the 4 modules I got 53%, 61%, 62% and 70% respectively, with a few firsts on individual projects within them, so I'm pretty happy with that, too bad none of those grades count eh?

I got a first class BSc. honours degree in Computing. My dissertation was also ranked easily high enough to go into our university library.

Students? Hard times?

I get this a lot off of the 'university of real life' crowd but I went to uni as a mature student, already work in my field through keeping my placement job and working 1-2 days a week through my final year and now work full time. My final year was significantly harder than my work at the time and much, much harder than the drone-work I was doing before university.

I'm also in a position that involves me monitoring our company's network traffic so I've got a fairly good read on how hard my coworkers actually work.

I really don't think you know what you're talking about.

I graduated with a 4.0 in psychology. I also earned summa cum laude, which the University of Colorado's psych program doesn't award unless you do an honors thesis.

My thesis was a factor analysis of the BDI-II, comparing the factor loading of postpartum depression with that of major depressive disorder (which is the subject of almost all BDI research). We tested mothers at four months postpartum and again at twelve months. The results of the study could help clinicians identify postpartum depression at its earlier stages because other research indicated that infants whose mothers were depressed for over six to eight months suffer from impaired learning and are likely to develop insecure attachment patterns.

The results showed a qualitative difference between postpartum depression and major depressive disorder, as well as differences in factor loading between four and twelve months (in mothers who suffered prolonged depression, that is). At four months, somatic factors played a large role, which was expected considering the demands of a newborn. At twelve months, depression was more cognitive, especially in feelings of inadequacy.

I got a 3.44 in Marine Biology undergrad degree a little over a year ago, and while I wish I did better, It was still pretty good. Life right now for me is much more relaxed than it was in school. I don't have to spend hours every week getting papers done, studying for 2+ exams every week, and all that other stuff. I will be going for my Master's at some point, but I'm working and doing volunteer work/internships for my field to get a better idea of what I want to do in my field and to look better as an applicant.

I got a 3.1 (out of 4 which is like a B) for my undergraduate major Philosophy and History. It was the top uni in Canada, so I kind of screwed myself over, should have gone to an easier uni. I will be totally honest, I work 10 hours a day and 3 hours every day on the weekend, and I am faaaaar more relaxed and happy then I did in uni which I did without work so was far less hours.

Graduated last month etc etc, with a 1st class honours in Computer Animation (BSc) so this means I do CG stuff and it's all very pretty.

Then I got told I also came top of the year which grants another award and a big shiny medal so that'll be cool to collect in a few months...plus I might be going back as an assistant lecturer in a few weeks!

No, definitely not a 4/10. I'm guessing a 4.0 would be like a 10/10 - 4.0 means straight A's. Through my entire degree program, I had a 97% in one class and 100% or higher in all of the rest.

Congratulations, I graduated my Bachelor of Criminology back in 2011 with a credit average, I had a few rough semesters (I lost a family member in one semester and got very sick a year later) but I got through a 3 year degree in 3 1/2 so I came out of it okay

I had mine back in June. I'm doing Illustration and I just about passed my first year. Not too bad I guess.

Just finished the third of my four years at Uni. Was stressful like hell, but now I'm comfortable knowing that if next year goes balls-up I can just claim a First-Class BSc and jump ship. Plus, I only need 63% next year to get a First overall, which is pretty sweet.

So now, it's pretty much just down to panicking about the dissertation topic/applying for a PhD.

However the degree is a Masters degree in Chemsitry from a top 15 UK university so that's pretty decent overall.

Considered a masters/doctorate integrated course (or a master's in a specialty)? Problem is, most supervisors these days don't think it worth looking at applications from bachelors' graduates unless they have a 1st since they're a great deal more prevalent these days than they were in years past... I spammed applications for a PhD in a chemical entomology but got told to piss off by everyone, despite being a double masters... *shrug*

In better news, my girlfriend graduated the other day and got a 2:1... teacher training next for her, hopefully...

German unis mostly use a standard school-grade system from 1.0 to 4.0 where lower is better [footnote]usually one doesn't pass above 4.0 so I'm not really sure whether higher values exist except to state "fail"[/footnote]. You might consider applying in Germany, then. I applied for a grand total of two PhD positions and got accepted for both of them. And you know the best part? I'm regularly employed by my University for the PhD and actually earn a decent amount of money! That, or at least being supplied by an equally paid scholarship, is standard issue here, and, admittedly, that was also the reason why I didn't go abroad for my PhD

I'm only done my first year. I got my results back in... May-ish. I've got straight-As so far, and I made it onto this year's Dean's List. I'm very happy about that.

Such an interesting, yet odd thread for me as I have almost no touch to all these degrees and figures. But anyway, I'm halfway done with my polytechnic degree. Courses, internship, and thesis all waiting for me in the near-ish future. I'll probably go to a real university after that to study business or something. Or does anyone know anything where impatience is an advantage?
