I'm going to say that it's hard to beat Kratos from God of War 2 + 3. The first one was pretty good with him as a character (though I still didn't care for it as I don't care for hack-n-slashers). The rest... he just decides to murder everyone. He doesn't care that his actions kill thousands, if not millions, of innocent people. All he cares about is getting his own way, and that makes him an unlikeable asshole to me.
Well, then again, that's kinda why I play the GoW games: So I can BE an unlikable asshole while having absolutely no ramifications in the real world (where I am generally mild mannered unless someone pisses me off).

I know she isn't the "main" character, since nobody is, but... Sister Miram Godwinson, from SMAC. That God-damn biblethumper is almost impossible to stand, because she'll get on your a**e if you so much as look funny at her, or the planet, or one of the other factions, or...

I never said that was a bad thing per say, just that it made him an unlikeable asshole. That's the point of the thread after all. Plus, if he wasn't an unlikeable asshole, they wouldn't had much of a story because he wouldn't do half the things he did.

I might get a frying pan to the nut-sack for this, but:

I like Tidus, Vaan, all of the characters from FFXIII, and I don't mind Nathan Drake...

HOWEVER, I think that Cloud can got eat a pistol (during a cutscene that he isn't bulletproof), and Sonic can run full speed into a line of fibre-wire...

The dude from Alpha Protocol, Michael Thornton. What an annoying git. And the most annoying thing that you never knew what git thing was going to come out of his git mouth. You could try to be cool and he'd just be more of a git. The game made you think there were at least three ways to be but there was only git.

The guy from saints row.

Damn! He is the most despicable character I've ever played. Its like taking the most insensitive parts of san andreas and make them even more horrific.

yea I agree that stilwater is a cess pot but I would like to have some sense of purpose other than being a total dick.
I kinda assumed that was the whole point though. I mean being a total psychopathic, mass-murdering dick is something that the vast majority of people who play a sandbox game will do anyway - this just removes the gameplay and story discontinuity that makes it harder to sympathize with say, CJ or Nikolai from the more recent GTA games whose cut scene portrayal is vastly at odds with the anarchy you've been wreaking with them in between missions.

On topic: Rush from the Last Remnant (admittedly never finished it so he may get better but i kinda doubt it), Polka & Alegretto from Eternal Sonata (Chopin was a damn badass though) and Tidus. But he goes without saying.

Final Fantasy 7's Squall. He's just so annoying that just having him in the game makes me not want to really play it. I guess the other characters in the game aren't any better either.

I'm not a huge fan of Vaan. Or XII at all. It's my least favourite Final Fantasy, including all the spinoffs and films and such.

I hate Altair in Assassins Creed. Biggest douchebag ever.
Ezio's a legend though.
Man you can say that again. And again and again... until everyone who thought Altair was cool gets the message already. Ezio was LOADS better.

I'm going to have to say that I pretty much hate any main character that is a blatant blank slate. Yes, that includes *gasp* Gordon Freeman. I'm sick of games wanting me to project my personality on to characters- why can't the main character have a personality of their own, and the game just lets me have my own thoughts on the situation operate on another layer at the same time? Sure made more compelling characters like Tommy Angelo and Sean Devlin more interesting to play as.

Adam Jensen.

Stupid gruff voice.

Cold, distant and impersonal, even to his own ex-girlfriend.

Prototype. At the end, he desperately tries to excuse the murder of 1000 random people and makes it sounds like the whole "situation" wasn't his fault. What a douche.

Raiden from MGS2. Prissy teen and nowhere near as as cool as Snake. Snake fights an army of Metal Gear Rays and Raiden fights one man in a rooftop. At least in later games he becomes a cyborg ninja though.
I'm pretty sure Raiden was the one who fought that army of Metal Gear Rays. Snake had to stay behind and fight Fortune.

OT: I know people have mentioned this already but

Auron from FFX.

Now I don't necessarily hate Tidus, far from it, but he's certainly no Zidane either. I guess I've always liked the mentor type of character in these kinds of games, and Auron fits the bill nicely.

Well, his only motivation is stealing the priceless artifact before the villain does it first. Oh, and his wisecracking is really annoying, especially since he does while ending the lives of those around him. But if you really want to know...There's a swimming pool at the top of the Hotel in the city level. Jump into it, and then out of it. Once you do, TRY to make it through the next 10 seconds or so without flinching. It's impossible.
You can't really take points away from a wisecracking protagonist if they crack wise after murdering someone... because that's part of what you do in a game, or read about in comics, or see in movies. Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & clank, Spider-Man, John McClane, and even Batman (sometimes) all crack wise after, or shortly before, murdering someone. And those are just off the top of my head.

And it's been a while since I played Uncharted 1 or 2, but I'm pretty sure he had other motivations. It might've been his initial motivation (you know, because he's a treasure hunter), but if someone saves the world, can ya really call them a douchebag just because their initial intentions were to steal something? People change, and that makes Drake all the more believable.

Seems to me like you're grasping at straws for reasons to hate him, but to each their own.

Oh, and sorry for going off topic...
Batman never crack wise :p
And Batman and Spider-man don't kill anybody :p (in the recent comics anyway, for Batman).
Sorry about the nitpicking...

Tidus of FFX and Vaan of FFXII stand out in my memory, together with Capell from Infinite Undiscovery. Then there's Desmond and Altaïr from AC - or as I call them, the Bland McBland twins. I can't remember if I disliked Galen "Starkiller" Marek or if my dislike for the entire Force Unleashed game has coloured my memory.

Probably more that I disliked, but those are the ones that stand out to me.

You do realize Squall is from Final Fantasy 8 right? Cloud is Final Fantasy 7's protagonist.
