I think saying Shepard doesn't have emotional range is kind of ignoring or not understanding a important aspect of what limits his range.
The moral choice system.
The character is usually presented with three options to choose from when talking, and when your questioning someone usually five, and that's just for one response to a dialog tree of 5-10 on average.
So Shepard whos charecter is considered legally sane has to act like a normal human being. If the player starts off his response with the good option, and his next response is the renegade option, his tone has to make sense in the situation. You cant have Shepard trying to speak in a diplomatic calming tone for 4 responses and then on the fly at the on the 5th response start turning all dirty harry in his tone or seething with anger, when before he was being diplomatic. That's why his tone HAS to remain relatively flat in comparison to other characters.

That said, the male voice actor is atrocious even with his limitation, the female voice actor does a far better job with that constraint in mind.

I wish Shepard did that. It would make listening to Male-shep even more entertaining than it already is.

Ok i Feel as though I must correct you. All Final Fantasies EXCEPT IX. Zidane is awesome.

Final Fantasy 12. I wanted to beat Vaan with a lead pipe. I really fucking wanted to. He was just horrible. I hated that skeleton with skin.

This is still alive?! And yeah, Zidane alongside Locke is one of my favorites, both following more or less the Lupin the III model, its just that Freya Crescent is even better for me in that game, if just due the fact that i love dragoons and that at the very end Zidane starts being a little emo.

Master Chief. No personality, and through him we have to go through some of the worst level design ever (I'm looking at YOU, CORTANA!). Before anyone says to read the books to get to know him better, if you can't give your character personality in the game, just call it a day and don't waste time trying to write in personality outside of the game. No point, not everyone can/will read the books.

Apart from that, possibly Niko Bellic.

I hate to say it, but Vaan had no reason to exist. If you take him out of that game, nothing really changes. Actually, things might go better. Vaan was a fucking idiot. Do you remember going to save Penelo in the mines? As soon as you get off the airship Balthier and Basch remind everyone not to use their names as that might cause some problems. Vaan walks right up to a random kid, Larsa (son of the the FUCKING Emperor!), and introduces them all by name. This was about 10 seconds after Basch and Balthier told everyone not to use their real names!

I think I know what they should have done. They should have taken him aside, looked him directly in the eye, and said "Vaan. Hey, look at me. No, don't get distracted by the little lights. Look at me. Yes. Good. Now, don't use my name. Okay? Got that? If you tell people you're running around with a sky pirate and the man who killed the No. Bad. Vaan. Look here. At me. Okay. If you tell people you're in the company of a sky pirate and the traitor who killed the King, bad things will happen. Okay? You got that? Good." Or they could have just left him in a car with the window rolled down and plenty of water.

Even the other characters hated him!

The prince from the cell shaded rehash, But then again i'd imagine it would just come under NAthan drake again or maybe we can stop blaming Nathan drake and rather NOLAN NORTH than fucking prick using that exact same smug tone of voice for every single character he does

I've been ninja'd but, Alex Mercer.

"Oh no, I'm a god-like, immortal, shapeshifter, what will I do? Woe is me!"
"I hate people, I'm gonna go kill someone. Bye sis, love you."

I mean, seriously, he's gotten super-powers with seemingly no drawbacks whatsoever, and he whines about it.

Though not a game character, I HATE Goku. While DBZ isn't exactly known for its deep plot a lot of the side characters were far more interesting and less annoying.

Eh, there are DBZ games so you can claim a point on those too. He's the same there as he was in the series. Anyway...

Master Chief is as bland as they come, Alex Mercer is a whiny *****, and Sgt. Cortez is an absolute moron.

(I am in fact just kidding about that last one. Sgt. Cortez may seem a bit dense at times ("Time to split!"), but he is just amazing in TS:FP; one of my favourite lead characters from any game.)

The main character from Persona 3. I kept getting vibes that he was making friends purely for the Social Link power rather than making friends cuz he's a nice guy and the Social Link power was just an added bonus (a la the lead from Persona 4)

Also "I don't care" came up wayyyy to often as a conversation choice, plus the fact that all other characters were developing on their own while the protaganist was just dicking around in his room.

I probably only picked up on all this cuz i played Persona 4 first though

In Uncharted 2 very early on he wanted to rob a museum without killing any of the guards. Then later he throws one of them off the roof and doesn't seem to feel much remorse about it (if you played the game it's the "there's a guy above you" part).
he lands in water, he could have survived (you know, maybe possibly!)

Starkiller. Although really, now that I think about it,

EVERY MOTHERFRAGGING CHARACTER IN THAT BLATANT DISREGARD FOR EVERYTHING STAR WARS. Except for Rahm Kota - I liked the way that he would stumble drunkenly around the main menu screen and mutter at you.

Squall Leonhart takes the prize for the first main character in anything that I completely disliked.

Like the OP I find Fenix forgettable. I would rather play the whole thing as Cole or Anya.

Sonic the Hedgehog desperately needs a reboot, in both art style and personality...He is just stuck in the early 90's.

Absolutely agree with Marcus. Despised him since GOW 1. Foundthe 3 main supports much more entertaining and wisecracking through the game.

Also, I can't find myself really liking Adam Jenkins from the recent Deus Ex game. I don't know if it's his voice. Nonetheless, he isn't a character find myself keen on.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a sucker for the Fable franchise. But was the male hero of Fable 3 not just so pitiful? I felt no sense of power from the personality emitted from him, despite my best efforts to butch him up. And he looks just like the girl, except more girly.

Hated both Hawke and Shepard to the point where I wanted to kill them both and repeatedly got them killed. Hated Nero in DMC 4 and Alex Mercer. Oh and the Prince from PoP 4.
I agree with all except Shepard. I think Shepard is great, I think he's got great character about him, as a renegade and/or paragon.
