I've heard stories of canned games later being released, but never going back this far. The closest I've seen to this was a ROM dump of what was supposed to be Star Fox 2 [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Fox_2] (SNES), and the most recent is a copy of Thrill Kill [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thrill_Kill] (Playstation) that has been floating around for a while.

Duke Nukem Forever just got one upped in the late release department.
I was just thinking that. Have to admire these people for determination, though one wonders how much more it cost them to get the cartridges done now than when it was mainstream.

Huh. I wasn't expecting so many of you to be opposed to the idea of buying this thing. I guess this isn't a retro collector crowd.

Does the rarity of this thing not do anything for you guys? Sure, it's forced and entirely intended, but for a maximum of $55, you're getting one of the only 250 cartridges of this game in existence.

That's kinda cool, right?
Truth be told it doesn't look that great of a game, and this comes from someone who was around before the NES.
It's hard to feel nostalgic for a game that wasn't around back then. It coming out now gives the people who did it a sense of accomplishment, but I doubt they are expecting to make any money out of it.
And...

Presumably because the "Los Angeles Schwarzenegger's Illegitimate Children" wouldn't make any sense for another 20 years.
Lame.

It's actually relatively common for prototypes to surface years later only to have the data dumped to the 'net. Since computers these days can emulate older systems with such ease, there are entire gaming sub-communities dedicated to finding, sharing and playing stuff like that.

If you're into that kind of thing, or especially esoteric, barely known gaming history, you should definitely check out Unseen 64 [http://www.unseen64.net/].

illegitimate child joke......how topical.
I am unreasonably proud of myself for how topical that joke is. In a week it'll be lame, but for this one shining moment, I'm the Richard Pryor of unreleased, newly-released NES roller derby simulations.

Actually I was thinking Illegals was a reference to illegal immigrants not illegitimate children.

Is it me, or does every single sports title from that era use the exact same music?

Actually, I do know people that do repro cartridges of NES and SNES games. There's a surprisingly large market for unreleased and fan hack games that are playable on original equipment.

I think it's neat when prototype stuff like this surfaces, and you can see and play games that just never got made for whatever reasons.

Then there's Bio Force Ape, but that's a thread all it's own, heh.
