When I popped in Fallout 3, my PS3 made this very unusual noise. It wasn't quite a grinding noise, and not quite a clicking noise either, it was a sort of "wiki-wiki-wiki" coming from what sounds like the disc drive. It's never done this before for Fallout 3, can anyone proffer any assistance?

It's just spinning the disk differently, getting to the sectors of the disk it needs. I think. Computers do it a lot.

My 360 does it with all Bethesda games, it doesn't like them. Just make sure you save a lot.

Happened to me once. I just turned it off and went to bed. Everything's been just fine since. Seriously though, I'm on my third PS3 and apart from the laser problem that killed the first two (I know 3% of all the launch ones and I got two!) all other sounds have been without and console breaking results.

Ah, thank you. I'll just turn of my PS3 and let it chill for a while. I suppose I was sort of foolish to assume that this was the precursor to my PS3 internally exploding or something of the sort. =P

Judging by the "wiki-wiki" sound your PS3 was making its either trying to become a DJ or would like to tell you about various subjects with varying degrees of inaccuracy.
My money's on DJ.

I think it is just Fallout. In the first week I was playing it, it managed to make all my other games crash at regular intervals. It gets used to it and sorts itself out.
It's like telling someone to go be friends with the kid holding the drool bucket. It's not happy about it, but it'll do it eventually.

I lol'd

Be careful with F3. The first time I got it it crashed my PS3 so I had to turn off at the plug and voila no more functioning disc drive.

Did it sound like it was speeding up and slowing down a lot duirng this sound?

If it was then its a sign you might have a faulty drive.

The general consensus here is: Be careful with Fallout 3

I popped it in, did all the vault quests, then as soon as I stepped outside into the beautiful light, the game froze. I had to turn it off at the plug.

Upon further inspection my blu ray drive had just...broke. So I had to get a new one (which Sony replace graciously and rapidly I might add)
