I was reading an article on BBC [http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/northamptonshire/8300185.stm] about Pygmy Hedgehogs [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domesticated_hedgehog] (aww, aren't they adorable?), and consequently had a conversation with my sister about unusual pets, such as turantulas and baby alligators (I don't know about other parts of the world, but having a hedgehog as a pet is certainly new to me).

I was wondering if anyone here has, or know someone that has, pets that don't conform to the status quo, and what it's like to own such a pet.

I don't (though I'd love to have a gecko to glue to my wall), but my grandparents' neighbours had a whole bunch of turtles. Because they're reptiles, keeping them happy was pretty easy: They built a little wooden pen where the turtles could move around freely, fed them salad and so on. Whenever winter came around, they just put them in boxes and left them in the cellar - the turtles always went into hibernation, so taking care of them during the winter months was even easier.

I have a swarm of Praying Mantes, about 60 of them. Is that unusual? I hope it is :)
I hope you gave them a snazzy Brood name?
Only about 16 of them are named, the rest were offspring, and seen as though we can't tell which is which at the moment in time, I just call them Zerg Horde.

So yeah, I can Zerg rush IRL, how about that?

I wanted to get a snake when I was younger, but my mum didn't approve.

Also, ever since we rescued a baby fox from the side of the road, I have thought it would be awesome to have a one as a pet.
I wanted to keep her so bad, but my mum said she was a wild animal, and needed to be let free.
She was right, of course. Still, it would have rocked so hard.
Foxes are awesome.

Damn, those things creep me out...mostly because they somehow materialise in unlikely places in the house and startle me =P Once I've seen them I'll pick them up and take them outside, but damn...*shudders*

I don't have any pets...unless you count my pet bean plants which gave me a wonderful crop of green beans last summer =) They're gone now, but I'm still nursing a passionfruit vine until summer comes again, in the hope of getting more than one passionfruit this time!

That's awesome. Now you just need to spread jelly all over the floor and you're ready to conquer the world!

I'll kill those Terran fools :D

By the way, Praying Mantes are really awesome pets, especially how ninja they are, once we gave one of our Orchid Mantes two houseflies, and it just went "Boomph" and got them both at the same time :O

What, with its separate arms?
I didn't think they could be that coordinated, but it sounds cool.
You know what would be even more ninja, though?

Yeah, that would be cool, I think they're next on my list :)

And yeah the Mantes are very co-ordinated, normally they'll just wait and watch their preys actions for 10 seconds or so, then just own them. It's awesome how the flies are still twitching and alive whilst they're inbetween an impenetrable vice and having their head eaten slowly.
