Upcoming Warhammer game and Movie tie-ins

Being a fan of warhammer 40k, I've been regarding the upcoming space marine game with cautious interest. Chances are it wont be amazing, but I'm hoping that it's at least playable. Experience has taught me that the vast majority of movies and brand video game tie-ins are shamefully half baked. My only possible exception to this is one of the old transformer games on ps2, which turned out to be a hidden gem.

So my questions are these, what do you think about the upcoming 40k game, and have you ever played a tie-in game that you really enjoyed?

I really hope that Space Marine is good, because I'm dying for a game like it to come out.

There have been some pretty awesome Star Wars games, if they count as tie-ins. Battlefront 1 and 2, Republic Commando, the KOTORS, and so on.

40k Space Marine does look pretty decent. I want brutal and bloody combat. If they put that in there then I'll definitely play it.

As for a tie in game..... I'm not too sure. Most of them have been utterly terrible. Super Star Wars was pretty good though.

In all honesty, I had forgotten about the battlefront series. I really enjoyed them and heard rumours about a possible 3rd coming out for ps3, any word on that?

Warhammer 40k space marine looks like it could be amazing. I'm really hoping for multiple playable factions (I freaking love Eldar).

The ultramarine film could be good... but they better not make it for the masses and it has to be bloody, gruesome and all about the emperor and heretics.

Most tie-ins completely suck... I'm hoping these will be good.

The studio got closed down. What would have been Battlefront 3 got ported to PSP. A shame really.

I am hoping it will be good. Though I am still sour that as a non-current-gen-console gamer that I won't be able to play it for some time.

Space marine actually looks awesome, I've been waiting for a game like this for ages.
A warhammer 40K game (other than DoW) that does justice to the universe.

Space Marine could be good, but I don't think so. From what I've seen, it has seriously underpowered bolters and has the PC fighting alone, something that Astartes don't really do. So no, I'm not hopeful.

The licence had so much potential for a movie. Think Eisenhorn, Ravenor, the battle for Armageddon. Instead, they're going for the most bland vanilla crap possible. I don't just mean the Ultramarines, but the whole feel of what I've seen is just wrong. Abnett could do a lot better.

I think the Space Marine game looks pretty good, apart from the Bolt-Pistols firing like Micro-Uzi's and being used to stun enemies while you get into melee range.

However if it's even half as good as the 2005 The Punisher movie tie in game, then it should be awesome. I loved that game and actually played it before I saw the film, which led to me being very disappointed with that movie on which the game was loosely based.

There are actually a few decent Warhammer 40k games they just don't work on modern computers well.

Chaos Gate, is X-com meets Ultramarines.

Space Hulk and the 2nd one are decent recreations of the board game.

I heard Final Liberation is fun.

I doubt it. The studio that made them shut down. So no Battlefront 3, no Mercenaries 3, and no Republic Commando sequel. Sad face.

it would be nice if GW would drop the whole love affair with the Ultramarines, i mean look at some of the choices they have as alternatives.

Blood Angels: Space Vampires
Space Wolves: Furry Space Vikings
Black Templars: Space Psychos
White Scars: Mongol Space Bikers

and these are just off the top of my head, come on GW make marines awesome again, drop the whole Smurf warrior monk bullfish.

I initialy thought like that, but a friend of mine made a pretty good point: they need to introduce the universe and the overall feel of 40k to a broader audience before moving to more complicated stuff. The release of the game will garner a lot of interest in the universe from gamer crowds that have never heard of an "ultramarine", so it's as good a place to start as any.

Think of it as the Assault on Black Reach for movies. ;)

And if you're still disapointed, just play Final Liberation and enjoy the awesome cutscenes there.

I don't think that you're irritated about this enough.
Try this: WHYYYYYYYY??????????

OT: The movie is guarenteed to be bad. It's quite clear that they're simply making a cheap cash-in. It'll frame the SPESS MARHEENS as the heros, an there shall be no grey.

They should make a movie based on IG instead. THAT would be something.

I would also like to point out, to those saying that the movie will surely suck, that the recent Dead Space, Dante's Inferno and Halo animated outing were all pretty damn cool.

I think they could still make a good movie based on Ultramarines, if they did it right. The problem is that I don't think they will. It doesn't give off the right 40K feel somehow, and I think they're going to make it black and white, with Space Marines as the white-knight heroes who save the day. A title like "Ultramarines: The Movie" doesn't help.

Yes, but all of those are niche chapters that don't represent the Astartes overall. The Ultramarines are more interesting than people often make out, it's just that they are overused quite a lot, standing in as a generic Space Marine chapter. Personally I'd go with the Blood Ravens, or just make up a new one.

And Ultramarines is a ridiculous name; sounds like a child's action figure.

The reason why they are using the Ultramarines is quite obvious, it's because A) They are the generic Chapter, showing the righteous fury and strength that is all Space Marines, and B) It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to do a movie about the Space Wolves, or the Blood Angels, because people who don't know the lore of the Chapter won't be able to make any sense of it.

OT: I think the game looks fun, and I have high hopes for the movie.
