It's not like the production executives responsible for this would invest their time and money in anything that wasn't guaranteed to sell anyway. If it wasn't Halo, it'd be something else. It's not preventing any new IPs from being produced.

I personally don't really care, but to summarize the feelings of everyone who does care:
It's moral harm representing when a franchise has completely "sold out."

I am truly thankful for the failure of the first Halo movie attempt. Not because I don't want it to happen - I figure it could be a fun popcorn-flick sci-fi action movie if done decently - but because the failure caused Peter Jackson to give an untested newcomer (Neil Blomkamp) a big pile of money and more or less carte blanche as to what he did with it. If the Halo movie had not fizzled, we might not have gotten District 9.
